To Mike Moutrat,
How deep is deep? I/ve been using a Leshe digger(trowel) and have dug 2 to 3 inches deeper than the top of the handle. Yet I haven't found that little silver noisemaker yet. What do u think I'm doing wrong? After digging 4 or 5 of those with nothing than I expect it is me. Could use some help on this. Tks in bunches.

Tough to say without hearing the signal, where des the depth meter read? could be your off center. if its a solid hit from 2 angles then somethings down there... not sure how big the lesche is, but I have a 14 inch trowel and the handle is even with the top of the hole many times before I get to the target...if the target completely disappears after digging thats a good sign your close..if its loud and you are deep then its probably on the side of the hole, if its iffy to begin with and stays iffy even when getting down a foot its probably trash...like I said tough to say without hearing the target myself

how does it sound in pinpoint? a deep coin is just a blip, if its a faint signal in disc and its big in pinpoint its probably junk, just be carefull because sometimes those real deep ones you cant even hear in pinpoint if near shallower trash...just dont mistake a nearby nail in pinpoint as the cause if your getting a solid response in disc then it might be a deep coin near a shallower nail

Thanks Jim, I've probably been covering up some good ones. Will try to remember those good points. I'm still looking for that first good find. It's a clad quarter/dime killer though. I just need to use your techniques. Tks agn. Has anyone reported finding any caches?

Sorry for the typing error..to Mike Moutray, I mis-spelled his name.

No problem <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> noone spells my name right... the faint, deep coin signals may be only a few inches deep or over a foot deep depending on the ground and the target itself. For the sake of arguement... say you got good loose damp topsoil with a silver dime flat... it should hit good at 10 inches. If your gain isn't real high or low and sensitivity is around half strength or higher it will "sound" deep - fainter volume, softer tone - and be fairly repeatable... the crosshair will hang around the upper right corner, bouncing around a bit, but nearly always overlapping the edges. The pinpoint signal will be noticeably weak, only a short series of blips or one or 2 single blips. If you are running with an audible threshold it usually will not null out any around the edge of the signal.
This basically is what an ideal deep coin sounds like... not many places produce signals like this, however... like I said there are many variables that affect the performance. HH, Mike.

mike,
ive had times when i was out detecting and id be getting high tone hits that registed in the high right corner. iwould get like one oe two beeps then the target would just disapear and know matter what angle i tryed to pick it up again i couldnt find it. id hit the pinpoint mode and i would be able to come across something then turn the pinpoint mode off and there would be nothing there. what would you say to that mike.
