Detecting holidays to uk.

thunderstorm

New member
I would like to warn anyone thinking of embarking on one of these holidays that they are greatly overpriced with false promises as well.

With a bit of thought it is extremely easy to come to uk and detect....there are rallies everywhere that usualy cost about ten pounds...many metal detecting clubs that can be joined...just bring your detector.
It was sad to see in the summer large groups of Americans turning up here reportedly paying many thousands of dollars to detect....
If anyone may be interested I could find information for them. There are two excellent monthly detecting magazines here called THE SEARCHER and the other is called TREASURE HUNTER. Im sure they are available to view on the internet.Hope this is useful to anyone who may be interested.

"Course that doesn't mean that he MAY have been promoting his own detecting guide service or for someone he knows.
Seemed honest enough to me.

... and detecting holidays = detecting vacations = paid hunts in the UK.

Anyone who desires to detect in the UK can do so with permission of the land owner / land controller. If you "go it alone" you may or may not find productive fields but you have less expense. That's what Keith and I do and we enjoy the total experience. Some years we do well, other times, not so well.

Paid hunts will be more expensive than going it alone. The good paid hunts research for productive fields that haven't been hammered over the years by local clubs and paid hunt organizers and also provide the paperwork / process to get your finds recorded and exported back home.

Paid hunts offer everything from airport pick up/ return, food lodging, emergency equipment loan, insurance, etc. All that costs money and paid hunts need to provide a reasonable return on investment for the operator.

Some paid hunts have been working the same land for years and years yet seem to give up far more than average numbers of hammered silver coins and gold coins .... some have accused these operators of "salting" their fields with bought coins. This does not seem to bother some detectorists who want to believe they in fact were the first person to touch their found coins or relics in hundreds or thousands of years. It does bother others very much since they could spend less money and go buy their own hammered silver coins and gold coins from the many UK coin dealers or off E-bay.

Compare paid hunts to going on a Caribbean cruise. You buy or rent a large enough boat, cook and clean up after yourself, and entertain yourself .... or you can book a cruise on Royal Caribbean, Holland America, NCL, Carnival, etc. Which will cost more .... the more services received, the higher quality of the total experience will determine what you pay.

Now thunderstorm, rather than paint with a broad brush, why not provide details as to whom is providing proper service / experience for fees paid and who may be ripping off us gullible Yanks?

Lost in trans atlantic translation guys...apologies...holidays here is indeed what you call vacation!!

Across the whole board concerning them deals I am saying be extremely cautious of ALL of them, yes ALL of them.
There is no doubt salting as you call it goes on.It is basicly a money making exercise for the organisers....certainly not comparable with a carabian cruise were you will get what you pay for....you will not get that on these detecting vacations. You will hear all the fantastic tales of hoards found nearby,etc....all true no doubt but designed to falsly build your hopes and experience up.
Hotel, flight, local rally or club equals better value and more genuine prospects.Whilst here call in ,literaly,on local farmers in the area to ask permission to detect on their field..not all but some will readily give you that permission...and you can retain the permission for the next time you come on vacation.
My only intention is to bring awareness that there is an upward trend in these type of vacations.....not because they are great but because they are fantastic money spinners for the organisers.
