When the ground is frozen, you can always try the snow that has been pushed up in parking lots. I've found lots of clad, but still not the elusive ring or other jewelry. It gives me a reason to swing the detector when the days are not too cold. If you have not tried it, you might be surprised how much get pushed into the sides of the lots. Once the snow starts to melt, it's easier to get into. Under ski lifts can be good areas if you can get permission. I've only detected in the snow a few times as I just moved from Arizona to Idaho not very long ago. I'm really looking forward to spring and summer. Although I have made a few nice finds in Arizona, I found that unless you were in a grassy area or very old area that coins and jewelry tend to just sit on top of the dirt forever and get picked up as most of the dirt is hard packed in AZ and most of AZ is dirt.
