Hi,
I want to signal this document about humanitarian demining and commercial detectors comparation:

and need some clarifications.
An AP , antipersonnel mine tipically contains small quantity of metal, from 0.1 gr. up.
Many interesting objects like coins are small sized and often don't reach 10 gr. in weight.
From the above doc it seems that the White's Spectrum XLT is the best detector commercially available now for multipurpose applications (not only demining).
But what abou PI detectors ??? I know that the AN-PSS-12 is a pulse induction detector in force to the US ARMY for demining but it's never mentioned here!
And also the best PIs like pulse star, lorenz, tm-d and deepstar ...!
I know that the previous ARMY version , the AN/PSS-11, is an IB type but really more powerful in depth respect to the PSS-12.
And I don't talk about discrimination here!
Is a PI detector really more powerful in depth respect to an IB or VLF one or is simple more powerful with larger objects ?
Why one would buy a very expensive (up to 7000 us$) PI detector instead of a cheaper VLF one and/or a deeper IB surplus (like the PSS-11) ????

as Eric Foster said you must have Acrobat Reader installed and the document takes a while to open.
I want to understand if/why PI is not the best to search for small objects like in the AP mine case.
Maybe it depends on the fact that the little is the object the little are eddy currents that run in at the same specific conductivity.
But I'm not a scientist and don't know if that is true.
But if it is so, anyone could doubt about the real advantages of a PI unit respect to other designs.
The doc explain a comparation between a number of commercial off the shelf detectors in mine detection operation used in test sites , Croatia and Cambodia and only few are really what one expect to be a real PI.
Why ?
Why the AN/PSS-12 (a PI) is less sensitive respect to the older mine detector AN/PSS-11 with smaller objects (an IB type)?
I've tested the above surplus and really the pss-11 is much more sensitive in air and field test!
This forum is really interesting but I still have some dubts about the real advantages of a PI unit out of beach sites and with small targets.

now i understand why
the an/pss-12 pi performance is generally lower than in other/early metal detectors.
It's clear now why it hasn't enough sensitivity to smaller objects.
I'll try different PI machines soon.

Totally different. I have not made the original Goldquest for some years now and I had a problem thinking up a suitable name for the new detector. Goldquest is very apt, so I thought I would use it again. I have called the new machine Goldquest SS, to partly distinguish it from the previous unit. Full details of the new model are being prepared now.

what kind of coil geometry can detect tiny needlepoints?
 
For the tiniest objects (a situation often encountered in industrial detection) you need a small coil and high operating frequency/fast timing.
