Hello I am new to the metal detecting hobby and I am looking for some help to determine where I can use my metal detector.

I have been told that the City, County, and State parks in the Austin, TX area are off limits the metal detecting. Are there any member websites or forums, which list detector friendly areas in Texas? I have also been told that you can have your metal detector confiscated by the local authorities at some cities. I do not want to cut short my new hobby. Any input would be helpful.
