Deus ground balance

When I switch my deus on in the field the ground balance and sensitivity are both 90 then when I put it to the ground there are no numbers on the top square the sensitivity I have tried pumping it shows g b failed I have tried on different fields but it is still the same I have never had this happen before hope you can help hazel

Hit the GB button.
Go to Manual. Your Ground Balance will probably be at default "90".
Hit the - (minus) button to decrease the GB below 90.

I assume you are trying to set the Ground Balance "positive" based on your ground conditions . . . .
While on many detectors you can get a tad more depth at the expense of stability by running the detector with a slightly positive ground balance (setting it above the actual level based on the ground conditions), the benefit is very slight on the Deus when you attempt this. Since you will need to remain in Manual GB in order to drive the Ground Balance positive, if conditions change you will be chasing a value to keep it stable. Often you are forced to drop the Sensitivity or lower the TX Power to keep it from falsing which in essence defeats the intent of using a positive offset to start with.
Keeping the GB balanced on the Deus will tend to provide the optimal performance . . . setting a slight negative or positive bias can help get a tad more performance at some sites, the increased chatter and instability will usually out weigh the benefit that may have been received.
On a separate note, your comment on getting the GB FAIL tends to be more due to low mineralization (see the bar on the far right edge of the screen). If there is little to no mineralization present, you tend to get the GB FAIL message as the machine does not see a noticeable difference between the ground and when the coil is off the ground . . . check it manually and then adjust the GB off that if needed . . . using TRACKING will eliminate the need to make changes manually to the GB setting.

You most likely don't want to use tracking with little to no ground mineralization which most likely is what is causing your GB fail. Tracking tends to track small targets and iron content in the ground for lack of mineralization to track. You will be all over, deep sounding targets will be inches deep because your GB is flawed, hot rocks will sound with a high tone once it starts tracking iron content in the ground. I have been struggling with it and came to the conclusion tracking feature can be a bad idea in mild soil conditions. Manually GB by pumping the coil and pressing the - button on the remote. sooner or later, you will hear the ground change within the coil pump. It will most likely start up the upswing of the coil pump with no mineralization. Press the + button once you hear the sound and stop when the coil pump becomes silent. You are better off leaving it at default GB of 90 than using tracking.
In the uk we generally don’t get high mineralised soils so the gb feature dosnt need to be touched, left at 90 is fine ,
I understand with you guys higher mineral soils can be quite common, ...I don’t know for sure, but I think I’d leave it at 90, detect for a few minutes and see what the reading is... if for example it’s saying 70... I’d raise it manually to 75 and detect away

After reading your post again, It won't read above numbers in mild soil. If it is not able to GB by pumping the coil, it won't be able to give you an actual Ground balance reading to post above your lower or current GB number. All you will get is the" - - "as it is not capable of giving anything else for lack of ground mineralization to produce a ground balance reading. If you manually GB and the reading is in the 70's as I find it to be here, coil shake will drive you crazy when trying sweep over taller grass as your coil will often false. Raise your GB to default 90 and it will eliminate the coil shake false signals from low GB numbers.Hazel said:

My soil is very sandy and with low mineralisation, and I can achieve very respectable depths with the default manual GB setting. You always have other settings to play with to enhance or boost the response from those deeper targets, some work quite well on relatively clean ground whilst possibly having a negative effect on say sites with iron contaminated ground - it is all about getting a balanced setup on the day to suit a specific site.
