DFX or Explorer

I am considering buying either a Whites DFX or an Explorer XS. Anyone have experience with both? Similar? One better?
Because I will spend hundreds of hours with it in the field I prefer to buy top of the line. When you calculate a per hour charge detecting is a cheap hobby to get into. Probably down around $2 per hour after a couple years.
I used to shoot skeet and shot four practice rounds on Saturday and four on Sunday. I reloaded so that 2.5 bucks a box plus 2.5 a round or 20 a day for two day 4 weeks a month or $160. For about 7 months or $1120 a year. Then there was the shotgun for $4000. and matches for around $400 each. So in four years time I was averaging $3000 a year. Now thats an expensive hobby. And all I got was a bang and to see the birds break up. Of course it was worth it but it was a lot more expensive than detecting.
And I got very little exercise.

First and foremost going to spend a lot of money on a hobby that many start and few finish. So you may want to start on a more user friendly cheaper model..
and upgrade if you stay.
Both have a learning curve that may or may not present a problem as for most its not a easy one.
I am sure many have done well with both and of course asking this question on the Explorer forum or for that matter a DFX forum will get biased answers.
Might want to try a multi line dealer for some hands on demonstration. I personally having used both would take an Explorer without question as a DFX was not my cup of tea. In the end its your call and some of us drive blue fords and some of us red chevies as we have personal favorites. In this case a Explorer in my mind is a far superior unit, but then again a DFX user may say the same thing. Do your homework and its your call...

however it doesn't sound like money is an issue so just pick one and jump on in,you can try them both.i started with the dfx because, like you,i couldn't decide.i used the dfx for about a year then i bought a used xs and i've had it about a year.which one do i like best?i still can't decide, they both have their strong points so i guess i'll keem them both.

I use both, but in different ways, my competition hunt unit is the dfx, can set it at a fast swing speed with the bigfoot coil, will suck up shallow coins at an alarming rate..The Ex is used for slow paced hunting in old areas for relics and deep coins, I like it especially around trashy areas that other detects have more of a problem.. each has its own language that it takes hours to learn..Either unit count on spending 20-40 hours before they really start to click, the dfx has many more adjustments than the exll.. you can program it ad infinum.. If you are new to the hobby, remember thant patience is a virtue, research any many hours will go by before you will feel comfortable with either, your going to have to devote more time work and effort than you think..Buts its worth the effort

Actually I've had an xlt for 8 years now. and another machine before that.
so i am not just starting but looking to see what people had to say.

I have an Explorer and love it. I have never used a DFX, but have talked to two dealers, one in Lawrenceburg Tn, and one here on the Ms. coast. They both told me they prefer the XLT over the DFX. They didn't give a reason, and I didn't question. There's a lot of DFX's out there. I think a person will do good what they are comfortable with. If you don't learn an instrument and learn to know it well. It doesn't matter what you have.

Well if you are a dyed-in-the-wall White's user, then buy the DFX. Nobody wil ever convince you otherwise.
One guy on here answered this regarding DFX:

"Just my opinion. But I have hunted with people that had one or the other. When doing comparisons I have found the MXT to be a better machine. Its cheaper, goes deeper, and is easy to use. IMHO"

Personally, I do not believe a 2 frequency machine can touch the depth of a Minelab EX II, but then I wouldn't hunt with anything other than the EX II.
We have DFX users converting all the time in here. And we are quite prejudiced towards the EX II. To me - it's a no-brainer. But then the machine has proven to me that it's spankin' all the competition.
I wish you luck on your selection... and btw someone is selling a brand new DFX on treasurenet classified right now!
Good luck!

Well I think it would be better for you to choose one from the features each of the detector has, what do you like in each. Make a list of features each detector has and a list of things you don't like, that would help. I like both detectors, and I still don't know which one to buy, but I'm leaning more towards the DFX because it seems more user friendly, don't get me wrong I think the Explorer II and the DFX go head to head, that's why I'm still deciding.

Forgott to add, you could go to a Minelab dealer and then to a Whites so they'll let you try each detector. You could also try out the Quattro, looks like it's a great detector. If you're buying a DFX try buying from Kellyco, you get free shipping and lots of accessories; Or eBay.

Go with the DFX and then feel free to hunt in Utah. I will welcome you with open arms.

hey chck out the troy shadow detectors if you are really want something that kicks butt! <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
