different models

Hi all:
I have been looking at the used Explorers on EBay and I am confused as to all the different model letters, ie, XS, SE, II etc. Could someone educate me on the different models and if one is superior to another or just later models? Also how does the new Safari compare? Will have to find a few things to pay for a new E-trac, but its on my wish list. Its also Xmas if someone is in a giving mood, LOL. Just kidding "NOT".:lol:
Thanks
Dan

Dan,

The Explorer line first came out in 1999 with the Explorer XS & S.

The next model was the Explorer II in 2003.

In 2006, The Explorer SE was released.

The Explorer SE Pro was released in mid-2008.

Big differences?

Explorer XS & S --> Explorer II
  • New camlock system on the shaft assembly
  • Display of both Conductive and Ferrous numbers (S & XS only showed Conductive values on the digital)
  • Enhanced internal processor chip

Explorer II --> Explorer SE
  • Enhanced user presets based on feedback
  • New design on the shaft
  • Changed the color from off-white to black
  • Improved NiMH battery pack
  • New internal processor chip

Explorer SE --> Explorer SE Pro
  • New Pro Coil for better balance
  • Sticker on the side of the control housing

There are users that are still cleaning up with their original XS (I have mine and it does a great job to this day). Some prefer the audio response of the II since the SE went to a VCO-based pinpoint. Bottom line is that it is a matter of personal preference in terms of what you buy. An XS in great condition would be a better buy than an SE that has been rode hard and put up wet.

If you can meet up with someone in your area that has an Explorer, see what you think and make your decision on that basis.

Hope this helps
