Dig Deeper Jewelry w/Quattro...

If you ACCEPT the -03 number in the Coin/Jewelry Mode, not only is this for some foreign ferrous coins, but non-ferrous jewelry beyond 7" in ground will read out -03 with an occasional jump up to the Non-Ferrous Numbers.

I found a White Gold Heart Locket at almost 8" which gave me repeatable -03 with an occasional jump/dance up to the 20s.

Hi Greg,
It's interesting that you found this to be the case. I have a similar experience on the gold fields, which happens quite frequently. I've gotten negative readings for old buttons, while in All Metal mode with no discrimination, yet when I switch to All Metal with some discrimination, (All Metal mode with no discrim is my favorite mode), I get a positive reading for the buttons. Sometimes, as you say, I also get a bit of jumping into the positive, but not very often. Just a thought!
Cheers Angela

[attachment 13992 PICT00302.JPG]Greetings Angela from Sunny But currently Rainy California...

When your using your Quattro in the ALL METAL MODE, are you talking about the Pin Point Mode, or do you mean in the Slow Motion Discrimination Mode with ALL the segments opened up?

Your coin size, buttons typically in mineralization can dance back and forth at depths of 9 to 12". Don't expect 100% accurate target ID at this depth.

Remember, anything deeper than 4" should be looked at closely along with the other 'pieces' of the puzzle.

The Deepest Non-Ferrous of Coin size proportions, I found at 12" with a White's DFX. No Visual Target ID as it was just too deep. I was using a Reverse Discrimination Method mentioned in Jeff Foster's Book Digging Deeper with the DFX. Local Treasure Hunter, Mike Simon, was standing next to me when I located this particular target and tried his Explorer II over the same target. His readings were HIGH Conductive on the Smart Find Screen but danced back and forth from Ferrous to Non-Ferrous (left to right extremes). Shook his head and told me he wouldn't dig it. @ 12" I located a Brass (patina-Green) piece of a tent city tip, about 3" by 1/2"

Hi Greg,
When I say I'm using All Metal Mode, it's exactly what I mean, with no discrimination using ferrous sounds. I'm not entirely clear on what you mean by "slow motion discrimination". I use the 'High Trash' setting to speed up the Quattro's recovery rate when I'm detecting in trashy ground. I rarely use anything else here, and though some may say that you sacrifice accurate ID when using 'High Trash', it doesn't really make all that much difference to me, as I almost totally rely on what I'm hearing through the earphones, alone. (But when I'm on the beach, I will check the ID screen, as it's a bit more reliable because I'm using 'Low Trash' setting, and I generally know if I detect a coin what it's likely to be looking at the number on the screen.) When I use All Metal Mode I'm accepting everything using ferrous tones. I feel that when you use discrimination, because of the slow recovery rate the Quattro has, it sometimes carries over the nulling onto other targets. By using no discrimination I can overcome this. I rely on what I'm hearing, and determine for myself what to dig. Also with no discrimination, I'm not losing targets that would give a negative reading, but are relics, such as the buttons. By the way, some of the buttons that I've found that initially gave a neagtive reading, were in fact, only about 4-6 inches deep.
Cheers Angela:)

Wow this is the best info i have found for the Quattro on any forum I have read...Does the ferrous tone of say a penny sound the same as
the conductive tone? I have tried hunting in the high trash mode and
there are so many tones so fast it makes my head spin....lol...same in the all metal mode...but I really need to learn these modes because it seems everywhere I hunt it just full of trash and keeps the Quattro nulled out...I used to carry Andy's book with me but I recently lost it in a car fire...thats another story...so I don't have it to reference anymore...I have found that when the Quattro says foil or pull tab or pop top it is right on the money every time but when it says quarter or dime it can be a twist off top and normally a penny signal is a penny....I also get alot of 39 and 40 readings...they normally start at 38 (quarter) and jump to 39 or 40...when I dig a 39 or 40 I generally find nothing in the hole...
have recently chased many of a 36-37 penny signal all over the hole
and found nothing...I use a Sunray X-1 probe to help me with pinpointing...I am a firm believer that if the Quattro says something
is in the hole then something is in the hole...I get so frustrated
when I cant find it...when I get a signal close to a null spot and switch to all metal to try to find it do I really need to noise cancel for those few sweeps? OK Ive rambled on enough...any help would be appreciated
Happy New Year to all

Hi Rotty,
I'm here in Australia so our coinage is a little different to yours (assuming you're in the USA). What I did was buy a whole range of bullion value coins to build a test garden with. I've found that a penny read 38 in either ferrous or conductivity settings, but the tone was slightly higher in conductive than ferrous. So there was a difference in pitch of tone. You might like to try swiping different coins in different modes and settings to find out more for yourself. Using no discrimination in All Metal Mode will stop the nulling of targets. Slowing down your sweep speed and using a smaller coil in trashy ground will help prevent sounds carrying over to other targets, though occasionally it's unavoidable. But listening carefully to the different sounds and understanding what the Quattro is telling you is a must, and that comes with plenty of practice. The more you're out there, in the field detecting, the quicker you're going to pick it up. I agree with you about when the machine tells you it's foil or a pulltab, it most likely can be. But a lot of rings also fall into the same numbering category, that's why it's important to dig everything. I detected what I thought was a crown seal at the beach the other week, sure sounded like it, but when I dug, it was a silver ring with 8 diamonds (since found out it's white gold). Yet the tone was loud and clear like a typical crown cap to me!! I have to get myself a probe!
Cheers Angela;)

I just spent 15 minutes writing a response and it vaporize when I went to post it.

You can minimize the Threshold Plummeting of the Quattro or Explorer II by carefully accepting some of the Iron #s. -10 for instance will allow you to pick up coins down to about 12" as many non-ferrous targets can take on that phase angle. EXPECT the Quattro to be busier when using this technique.

One of my customers, Ollie, found a private property area in San Francisco and systematically cleared off the top layer of clad and tabs. Eventually he switched to his PIN POINT mode and was going after the Very Deep Pulsating Targets. Recovered about 15 items of Silver Coinage and Rings, including a Morgan Dollar at up to 12".

We posted a photo of this particular stash of cash on the Jeff Kinzli California Forum. Caused quite a reaction among the forum friends.

Thanks to everyone who read and responded to this thread...For us newbies to THing some of these high end machines (well the Quattro was high end to me anyway)have a rather steep learning curve...Im gonna try one of Gregs methods today at a 100 yr old mill village house and see if I have any luck..
Happy Hunting
