Digging in hard gravel

cc8137

New member
I am a newbie to this and it might be a stupid question but..........When digging in gravel....is there an easier way to retrieve a target or is it just pure patience to get it dug out? Lately I've been ignoring targets in gravel because they are so hard to retrieve and sometime get "ghost targets"

do you mean like gravel in parking lots?
i usually dont even etect there as i know i might break my digger haha

Rock hammers. Rock chippers. Estwing brand is the best. See a couple here.
A screwdriver and a hammer will work pretty good too.

Yeah, an Estwing geologist's pick (hammer) works just fine in hard pack but you need to use a little judgement on the locations. The backfill will make a soft spot and potential pot hole in a compacted area, which could affect your popularity in the region. I carry one in the car and use it now and then where the digging doesn't matter much and there is a chance for silver or jewelry. Targets out of there are likely to be pretty beaten up by the traffic and the rocks.

thanks for the replys, I am talking about hard packed gravel. I'm working a park that has pathways threw it filled with packed gravel. (Univ of Indiana-Bloomington) Based on the replays, I think I'll ignore some of the possible targets.
