Digging minus numbers

Well I guess you all know that meter numbers such as -1,-2,-3 are always good non ferrous targets and hardly ever iorn,I am just wondering what was the lowest "iorn" number that turned out to be a good non ferrous item,I did once dig a -7 number on the beach that turned into a copper penny giving 34 once I got it up onto the surface!
So I'd be interesting in hearing about your Minus numbers that turned out to be deep non ferrous.

Hiya James nice to meet you on here.
I personally have not had a "good"recovery
on any number more than minus five.
At least not yet anyway.
Best wishes Paul.

Hi James :)
Your question is very interesting as i have never dig a minus target!
I hope someone more experienced than me to help us out.
I would like to ask you, what did you usally find when you dig
-1, -2, -3 ? Because many times i found a negative target like that but i never tried to take it out!!! I was always thinking that it's just iron.

Thanks, Yannis

Hello Yannis

If you are not digging -1,-2,-3 then you are missing a whole lot of good non ferrous targets such as coins and relics, usually as you sweep you will get signals like -1,-2,-3 then the meter will give the odd jump upto a + number and then back down to -1,-2,-3 etc, these type of signals are ALWAYS good targets and never iorn, dig them but be prepared to dig deep!,rarely you will get this kind of signal on a very tiny object such as a lead shotgun pellet, these signals will not be deep.

If you are in a park after the old coins then these minus numbers are the best signals you can get as if it turns out to be a coin then it will be a deep one and often old, also these deep coins in the 10+ inches range are often missed by other detectors so you may do very well indeed in a "hunted out" spot!

Good hunting!

Hi James,
We have a couple of steel coins that will do the jump from minus numbers to positive numbers. You can check out my post on charting your own coin ID values.
It also happens to jewelry such as class rings if you stand them on edge with the wide portion on the bottom and wave the coil over it.
You are right that we should dig more of these signals.
Doug

I would have to entirely agree with James. If you're not digging the minus numbers, you could be missing out on coins or relics. But I also feel it depends on the tones you're listening to , and the type of ground you're detecting in. I'm not very technical, but I'll explain as best I can from my personal experience: At one particular beach here in Aussieland, I've been pulling out the old one and two cent pieces, no longer in use. They've been in this very course orange sand for years, and being copper, tend to erode and get the typical green coating on them. These coins, out of dirt would read around 35 or 37. From this sand, they're jumping from -3 to +6, occasionally the coin with this reading will change to a fluctuating +35 or +37, if I slow the coil over the target very slowly, and then hold the coil directly over it momentarily, the signal is bouncy, but you can tell it's something worth digging. But one hour of digging landed me around 30 of these coins. On the gold fields, I've had much older coins read at -2 or -3, and other relics at -6 or -7. The type of signal you're getting with the reading is also very important, but it takes practice to realise a potentially good target. Simply, dig everything, then you'll learn what to go by. Hope I've helped somehow.
Cheers Angela
