Saw this neat looking expanding trowel at Menard's last week and thought it would be the cats meow to cut down on all the bending and knee work. However - when I tried it out, it bent first time I put backward pressure on the long handle. Only cost 9 bucks - and is very light. If it were a bit more "beefy" and had a foot step, would probably do pretty good. Would do well in the sand as is I think, but the ground here is still pretty hard - and frozen. Like this tool as it fits nicely in my detector bag when it's drawn down. Might get a good welder to make me a more beefed up lower section with a boot step as long as it doesn't end up weighing a ton. Just a wild idea.
Anyone ever tried a UV flashlight at night to try to spot surface gems or gold? I heard a UV flashlight (they cost about 20 bucks) will make diamonds and other gems - like ruby's and such - glow or shine brilliantly at night like an old blacklight poster. Remember those? Not sure if Gold has any luminescent properties under a UV light. I don't have a light or any gold to try this out on. If you do - let me know what you discover.
