I need some information. I used a Fisher F2 with a Nel Hunter coil, 12.5” x 8.5” DD.

I went to a new beach, for me, on Lake Erie. It was a disappointing beach because the water level is so high and not much beach was left. I worked it any way. I was going fine until I hit a stretch of hits that gave me trouble. Hard signals with some jumping between large coins and up. X’d it and pinpointed it and located it solidly. Dig and it disappeared. I even started using the wiggle of the end of the DD. Still disappearing when digging. I am used to things disappearing, but that is usually before I dig, not after. Even great signals bounce around a bit on Lake Erie sand. Signals one direction and not the other, okay, I move on. I turned down the sensitivity and it kept happening. Sometimes I find a coin and other times nothing.

Is this caused because of mineralized sand in the beach? How do I cope with it? Overall, I have to say I really enjoy using the F2 and the Nel Hunter. I think it works better than the 8” coil for covering a lot of ground. I still use the Sniper coil in trash areas. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

...I hunt Lake Michigan beaches, but I suspect Lake Erie has the black sand as well?...We have black sand here that forms in layers that will really scramble a signal, or present a false signal...the thing is, you really want to find that black sand on account of theres all sorts of good targets in it...I hike down the beach looking for heavy black sand and hunt it...old coins are hiding in it...I got three silver dimes out of it so far this year.. a real fast sweep will light up a target...I dont run too high a sens...generally 75 on down depending...

I use both the Pro and the 70 and just sort of got used to it.........Do your beaches look anything like this?
Mud

I think that is how the F2 responds to wet black sand since it has a set non-adjustable ground balance.

Lots of coke in some of the beach areas of Lake Erie. Maybe that is what your hitting on.. Sometimes it stops hiting it when you dig the hole..
