Discriminate Setting Question

spimly

New member
I am new to the Deus (one time out) and have been reading the old posts to learn as much as I can. One thing I don't understand is why the discriminate level is set to 6.8, 8.0 or 10 for all of the default programs. The manual shows that the iron range goes to 10 generally but does not show anything of interest until the Small Jewelry range which starts at around 27. In addition, I have not read where anyone on this forum has found something interesting (non-ferrous relic, jewelry, coin) any lower than about 30.

So given all this, why shouldn't I set the discriminate level to 25? What are you finding below this that I would miss?

Thanks and HH.

Everything that I have read and my experience with the Deus tends to be: less is more when using discrimination.

I run my custom DEEP seeking program at a 2.0 discrimination. I had it at 1.0 for awhile but for the extra 1" in depth it was just a bit too noisy. There are many depth studies (especially on the UK forums) that show the dramatic loss of depth with those high stock discrimination settings. I think (like having the GB default to 90), the manufacturer wanted the user to have a pleasant experience with the machine as opposed to pushing it to it's limits when using the stock settings.

Thanks Barry,

Since posting this I have stumbled on a couple of posts that essentially repeated what you said. Maybe we will get a volume control for each of the tone ranges in V3.0 - I know I would find that useful. Then we could set discrimination to 0 to get max depth and then, with a multi-tone program, set the undesired ranges to have little or no volume.

That one's at the top of my wish list.

One remark to above.
I was a big fan of 0 discrimination to increase depth until I discovered that such a setting deactivates silencer. After that, I keep discrimination around 2, which seems to be a good compromise for most of places in Poland.

Tested. C_D, disc on zero doesn't deactivate silencer! I have Deus 2.0 eng.

Hi,
Here the copy of correspondence with producer regarding the issue (history from bottom to top):

At 1 it will have close to no effect

Hmm... very strange. That is, according to the logic of the phrase "If you put Disc to 0 then Silencer is deactivated", if discrimination at zero, silencer can be set to any value, it does not matter - it just really off?
Nevertheless - thank you for information, need to test.

C_D, colleague tested, you are right. Silencer is deactivated. Thanks for information once again .

Hello,
I've myself asked to XP on the french forum a question about some settings and more exactly about the 0 disc so here's the answer:

I am not sure how much depth you need? I hunt for jewelry and I have only found 1 ring deeper than 6 inches.I have hunted here and in the UK and have never found anything of value under 38. I imagine that maybe a thin gold or platinum ring might come in lower. I found hammered silvers and even the quarter pieces read in the 50's. I have found several small 24kt jewelry pieces and they read in the 70's & 80's in the ground.I can't explain why they read that high, but they did and the purity of the gold was verified by a jeweler.I have begun hunting with discrimination in the high 30's.That's been my experience.

Not all people here are from the USA. Some people live in Europe, where you can find Roman and Middle Ages coins (depth) and iron arrowheads (value "under 38").

Hi,
that's right, I'm from France, and for example I dug a 11" hole this afternoon to find this kind of object, it's a gallo-roman zoomorphic key; so I sometimes need a great depth, not anytime because items are surfacing (erosion, agriculture, physic's phenomenons, etc.)
here is the object by the way :)

Deusdigger, read in this topic: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?83,1815423,1818193#msg-1818193 about French video.
Man puts a coin into the pit, covering it by brick and with discrimination on 7.2 Deus does not see it. With decreasing discrimination Deus see it better. So, it is one more argument in favor of work if not on 0, but at possibly low discrimination.

That type of hunting situation is for mineralized ground and my dirt is not mineralized. Every situation requires different programs. I don

Deusdigger, I hunt in much the same fashion as you. While my jewelry program is set at zero notch, I often find myself setting it into the mid 30's after digging so much foil.
What does come in under the 40's are gold chains. I've tested a couple thin chains with small clasps. They tend to jump around but most numbers are in the 20-low 30's. Thats a lot of foil digging to find a thin gold chain.
