Discrimination vs. Notch

DirtFishingDude

New member
I have read many posts that report greater depth running with no discrimination and in the same breath recommend a 00-10 or 00-23 notch. This is confusing to me. My understanding is that NOTCH is just an alternative way to set discrimination filters that do not have to start at zero.

Can anyone explain if there are any functional differences between Discrim. and Notch?

Well, I'n no expert on the Deus, but I am with you on how I would expect discrimination to work, whether its a notch or base iron disc.

Notch is not a filter, it simply silences the tone in the notch range that you select.

So you are saying notch will not effect depth like using disc. ?

That's right but be careful when replacing discrimination with notch. Silencer needs a few points of discrimination to work.

Seems obvious once you read it, but that connection had not been that clear in my brain. So thanks for sharing that insight. Very helpful.

That

I never notch the range 95-99. Too many nice fingings in this range.
I tested notching for many hours in different soils and iron trash concentration. The best setting for me was discrimination around 3 combined with notch from 3 to 10. Remaining range I split by sound discrimination, giving separate tone for id 99.
Silencer is a filter but it doesn't reduce depth significantly and helps with noice caused by difficult ground.

Brilliant! I think that was my missing piece! I moved my discrim from zero up to 3.2 (seems appropriate) and notched 03-10. Dropped my silencer down until I just got the slightest background crackle. I was also able to bump the sens. up to 95 most of the time. It only became unstable on an area of high mineralization where I was still able to run sens at 92. In this mode, I was able to recognize rusty iron falses much better!

Silencer was definitely not working with discrim. set to zero!
Thanks so much for your input!
