Do I have a bad 18.75 coil ?

I was out yesterday with my X 50 and had trouble ground balancing with my 18.75 concentric coil on it. I tried lowering the sen. to 8 and all three channels of my noise cancelling and made sure I was in a clean area in all metal mode but I still just got a low loud frequency no matter how I adjusted the ground balance ( from 0 to 20). Even at the sen set to 8, I was getting alot of chatter from the x50 two feet above the ground after I gave up on getting the ground balance set and just set the ground balance to 7. I turned it off and put on my 7.5 concentric coil on and it worked fine. No problems setting the ground balance and was able to get the sen. up to 14 of so with no problems . I bought both coils and the x50 used a couple of months ago and am not sure about the 18.75 coil now. Is this a common problem with high freq. coils or is mine bad? what do you think ?

Sounds like you were someplace where there was a frequency harmonic pestering you. Changing frequencies by changing coils took you out of range of it's effect.

Thanks for your input Longhair. I have used it in other places before with no problems maybe thats it.

No, it is not a common problem. And if the chatter happens when the coil is suspended above the ground by two feet, it isn't likely to have anything to do with ground balance. I would suggest that you either had some extreme electrical interference in the area that effected the harmonic frequencies of the 18.75 kHz. Or, your coil shot craps! If you go back and try it in places you've hunted previously with no ill effects, it must have been that specific site. However, if it continues to chatter in other locations, I would guess that something is wrong in either the coil or the coil connection. Check the connections on the coil end of the connector to make sure all the pins are making tight contact. Wiggle the cord where it enters the coil to make sure it has not been pulled loose. And if everything looks good and feels tight, I'd suggest you call Minelab to see if they have any other ideas. Worse case scenerio is that you have to send it in and have the Minelab Techs take a look at it. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks Randy, I'll try it again in a different spot that I'm good at digging junk :) and see how it acts. Good hunting, Mark

I also have problems with my 10,5 DD 7,5kHz... Its fine in for the first 15-20 minutes, then it start to go off, chattering and there is nothing that solves the problem. I have done all the things I
