do I have a broken omega 8000

New to the hobby, used to play with an old whites 20 years ago. Recently got the bug and purchased a new omega 8000 to get back into the hobby. obviously this new machine is a lot different than what i can remember about the old white machine. Anyway after messing with the new omega for a bit i think its a bad unit.... the ground grab doesn't seem to work it just stays at 82 regardless of what i do, pumping it etc... and the down button for the manual adjust has no affect. I try to work the notch button and again there is no effect when pushing the front panel button... it will pick up metals and seems pretty accurate testing nail, penny, nickel, dime qrt gold etc..... i just dont seem to have any control over the panel or settings..... Anyone seen this and had to return, could it be emi... is there a reboot or reset that i can try

also should have mentioned im using the 11" dd coil and i ve read the are very sensitive to emi. could it be that its just emi? would that affect the notch feature and the ability to ground balance?

Shut it off and do a factory reset...how to do it should be in your owners manual or online someplace..are you outside as you attempt this? Somebody familiar with your machine should be along shortly...

I know on my T2 SE for the ground grab, the coil has to be near or on the ground prior to pushing the switch forward then bobbing up and down. I thought I had a problem but saw a post from Monte on that. Otherwise the machine was stuck on 90.Good luck!

The manual ground adjust has to be pushed SEVERAL times before it will change the number value one number! Push on down button and hold it for a few seconds and watch the numbers and see if they don't start changing.

On the notch button what are you expecting to see happen?
It should move across each written target listed and cause tem to blink, does it do that?

There is no factory reset that I know of for the Omega, it does not save or hold any last settings when its turned off, but the default for the ground balance is 82 each and every time the unit is switched off and back on.

I always put mine in all metal and look for a clean spot before trying to ground balance. Next I pick the coil up a couple of inches off the ground push the ground grab button the continue to pump it up and down until I get either a solid lock or a small up and down change in the numbers. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for all the comments. I took it to the park today and I was able to get the ground grab to work just one time and yes several pushes on the down key did get the ground balance to start dropping that time as well. Tried to duplicate it a little later at the park and here at home again and its back to its same old tricks. Stuck at 82 and just makes a lot of chatter no matter where i go or how i try it. It does lead me to believe that maybe its EMI and or that I'm over something in the ground all these other times.... Are they super sensitive and generally difficult to ground grab or balance like this? Should i turn down the sensitivity to a point where it settles down and is quite while trying to ground grab? I usually just put the nob at 12 o'clock and have it in AT as that's what the directions say.

Regarding the notch, the manual states i need to push it three times and a metal category will start to flash. I push once, three times, in AT mode in disc mode and even when i was ground balanced at the park and it does nothing.... as far as that goes tone and frequency don't seem to change anything either... should there be a visual indicator on the the screen when I press tone or freq buttons?

The thing seems buggy to me to a point of frustration but I'm not ready to give up on the possibility of user error. One thing i remember from playing around with he old white model when i was younger was that they are sensitive and temperamental to ground conditions... Its still under warranty so ill keep playing with it until i have to throw it in the lake for sanity or send it back to have it checked out for the sake of the 600 bucks it cost me ;-).

oh and yes i saw monte's note about setting it right on the ground before starting the ground balance. That was what i did when it worked at the park. Haven't tried what digginLA said yet. Ill try off the ground a few inches before i start the process and see if that's any better.

Thanks again everyone for the pointers, ill keep checking back with progress. Did find a quarter today in spite of it all. It said it was one and when i dug it, bam there was a quarter :)

Aguaman,

I took this from the Omega 8000 Manual

I'm glad to hear that you got your suspicions confirmed. At least now you know where you stand in regard to the issue with your Omega 8000 and I'm sure Felix and his crew will fix you up at a reasonable cost.
