Do I have a HOT Omega 8000 or a dud T2 Classic?

Just curious what your opinions are on my main two machines. I think my T2 may be lacking a little in the depth department. Just never seemed to be up to par with my new to me Omega. I had a version 5 Omega a couple years ago, but this one is a version 4 and seems to be noticeably deeper. I done an air test in the backyard, in an area with fairly low EMI. Machines were setup as close as possible.

I have also noticed a difference in performance on buried coins and stuff out in the field away from all noticeable EMI. My dirt is "Alabama red dirt" and there is usually 3-4 bars on the mineral scale on the T2. Both machines usually GB around 45-65.

Omega with stock 10" Concentric Elliptical
Sens 90, Disc 10, Tones 2

Barber dime: 10 3/4"
IH penny: 10 3/4"
Nickel: 11 1/4"
Quarter: 11 3/4"
Eagle coat button: 11 1/4"
Musket ball .69 cal: 11 1/2"
Minie ball: 11 1/2"

T2 Classic with stock 11" Biaxial DD coil
Sens 99, Disc 10, Tones 2+

Barber dime: 8 1/4"
IH penny: 8 3/4"
Nickel: 9 3/4"
Quarter: 9"
Eagle coat button: 9 1/2"
Musket ball .69 cal: 9"
Minie ball: 9 1/4"

T2 Classic with 9X8 NEL Sharpshooter coil
Sens 99, Disc 10, Tones 2+

Barber dime: 7 3/4"
IH penny: 8"
Nickel: 9"
Quarter: 8 1/2"
Eagle coat button: 8 3/4"
Musket ball .69 cal: 8 1/2"
Minie ball: 8 3/4"

Observations:

The T2 had a much sharper "cutoff" when the signal faded out. The tone got slightly quieter and then just stopped. There was modulation, but not nearly as much as the Omega

The T2 loves nickles, LOL

The T2 was quiet as a mouse. Zero chatter, like it wasn't even on.

The Omega has a very wide band of modulation to the audio. The signal started out strong and sharp, then faded steadily until the signal just whispered out. Really gradual.

The Omega was chattery when just idling, hence the slightly slower sens setting. Even out hunting it's chattery when idle, but goes quiet as soon as you are sweeping. My Version 5 was slightly quieter in this regard, but not enough to matter.

There is a frequency difference between these machines. The Omega is around 8khz, and the T2 is 13khz.

Just thought I'd share my findings and see what you guys thought about it. As always, these are just air tests and in ground depth may be different. Also, as noted I have fairly bad soil here in most places. But I have noticed a depth difference in the machines while in the field, for what that is worth. I have always really liked the Omega as a coin shooter. And I LOVE the T2 as far as features, menu layout, ergos, etc. But after this little experiment, the Omega may become my machine for relics too. :detecting:

I got similar numbers to you on the Omega V6 that I once had but in all metal and sens at 70 (equivalent to maximum sensitivity and zero threshold). By operating the Omega at 90 sens, you have the threshold nearing maximum level which will influence results. Try the test with both detectors in all metal and sens at 70 on the Omega and 99 on the T2 with zero threshold on both.

There are to many mastakes that can happen while air testing, so I do inground tests in my soil.

I have both detectors and here are my observations:

The T2 Classic I run sens about 90 , Disc at 0 or 1, # of tones 3. I ground balance.

Omega 8000 , Sens 80, disc 1, Tones 3. (I use the 8 inch round coil on it) GB made.

In my high mineralised soil the T2 gets more depth and better Target ID than the Omega 8000 with the above settings. But if I run the Omega 8000 in All Metal the depth is much better than in disc mode in my soil. Target ID still not as good as on the T2.

So in my soil the Omega in All Metal can go as deep as the T2 in Disc Mode. The T2 Classic always wins when it comes to target ID on deep coins in mineralised soil.

In mild soil the Omega 8000 can be as deep as the T2 Classic, even with target ID. The higher the Fe3O4 readout the more advantage the T2 Classic has over the Omega 8000.

In the ground in my Georgia Red Clay my T2 Classic won't hit a 10" dime with a normal sweep speed but if I speed up my swing to a brisk sweep speed it picks it up along with a accurate target ID. This is in 3-4 bar dirt. The T2 owners manual even states that to get max depth that the T2 needs a quick sweep speed.

I dont have an omega but I know the T2 is a beast in all metal.

My Omega 8000 Version 5 is slight hotter than my new version 9.0 T2 both in air test and in ground.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and my soil is hard on detectors. I have to use a Minelab FBS for most of my
coin detecting because it's the only detector that can ID coins accurately at depth here.
The Omega 8000 has better modulation and they both have great All Metal modes.
My Omega 8000 V5 is noticeably hotter then a previous V4 that I owned.
The T2 is unbelievably quiet compared to the Omega but even turning down my Omega to quiet the chatter it
still punches deeper on a dime then the T2 on 99.

Sounds like exactly what I'm seeing with my two machines. My Version 5 Omega didn't seem as hot as my "new" Version 4 though. But I can't confirm since they aren't both here to test.

I agree with your findings 100% on the depth, modulation difference and everything.

Maybe it's time for me to try a Minelab here in my red dirt?

Thumper a Minelab Explorer or Etrac will get you more depth but at a cost and that would be recovery speed and target separation due to the processor of the Minelab's being slower than say a T2 or Omega. And you also have to slow your sweep speed way down to a crawl and also the ergonomics of the Minelabs aren't the best in the world.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah I don't think I could get down with that. I knew there had to be a reason I haven't cared to try a Minelab just yet!

Thumper, impressive air numbers on that Omega. I had the Omega cousin, the F5, years ago and it didn't test quite that strong.

Since there is no accepted standard for air testing, what was your criteria? Solid two-way signal, any signal at all, or somewhere in between?

And did you do any testing in 4 tone? If so, were depths comparable?

Yeah I was pretty impressed with it. I had a Version 5 before and it wasn't nearly this stout. I can't say it has anything to do with the version number for sure. This one isn't any more or less chatty or emi sensitive than my other one was.

I called the numbers at the very last repeatable signal. Not an absolutely solid hard loud "beep" but solid enough to definitely know it was a target.

I didn't try it in 4 tone, sorry.

I just got an NEL Sharpshooter coil so I may repeat the test when I get time

Thanks Thumper, I like to ask because there can be inches difference between solid repeatable and any response at all.

Almost 11" on a silver dime with a signal you'd most likely dig is a strong Omega for sure. Bet it'll find you a lot of keepers!
