Does anyone else do this???

Do any of you guys watch movies or watch tv and see places where you think "Wow, I wonder what's hidden around there?". I was watching Forrest Gump today and thinking about that house where they filmed all the parts that he and his mother lived in. That has to be an old house down there in Alabama, imagine what is out around that place. Is it obsession now??????? I do this all the time.

It may be just this winter will not go away and I cannot wait to swing this coil on the new Ace 250... Going cabin crazy here!!!

I went to my daughters basketball game today in another town close by. We arrived at this school with a huge playground which is located in the historical part of this town and right next door to the original town church. As we were exiting our minivan I said to my daughter "Wow Kayla, we need to come back here and metal detect"......My wife replied first by telling me to shut up!:garrett:

All the time, everywhere. But there is one thing I do,I never leave home with out my metal detectors, never, never. I always have my camera ,shovels, knee pads etc.My back seats in my car lays down and stays down during the hunting months. The metal detectors stay in the car 24 -7. I live in a rule area and have a garage.

Yes, I also do this too, besides the tv, no matter where I drive I seem to look around and daydream of what could be here or there. The town I live in was incorporated in 1762, lots of old homes, old foundations of homes that once stood, very old farms all over the place. The house I am in that we rent, half was built in 1797, the other in 1890. The owner said detect away and have fun. He has never looked into detecting here, and we doubt anyone else ever has. If this snow would just melt.... Not likely yet, we are supposed to get more today...

I can hardly watch TV during the winter. Every park, school, ballfield that I see gives me a tightness in my chest. One show that I have particular trouble with is that Animal Planet show where they rehabilitate out of control dogs. Every show has at least one trip to a park which always looks like prime hunting grounds. I think if you live in a part of the world where winter interrupts detecting, it happens to everybody.

Chris

PS I think that Forrest Gump house was a set and was built for the movie. That's what I seem to recall from the dvd extras. Not that that really matters!

When I see hot girls on TV or a magazine on some beautiful beach I dream about detecting the sands. Then I have a completely different dream about the girls!

Some of the Forrest Gump scenes were shot on a plantation in Louisiana called Oak Alley. We took a tour there and that's what they said. I believe the scene where Forrest was running with his leg braces were one of them?

Good for you on the owner being so generous. Years ago a buddy of mine wanted to go MDing and asked me to pick him up where he rented. Had never been there before but when I arrived I realized it was a pre-CW house I had researched that was used as a hospital by both sides. Anyway, where he wanted to go was not on the property but in an adjacent field owned by someone else he had permission to hunt, so we walked to the dig area because so close. When we walked back I just left my machine on during the return for random scans and just as soon as we reached his rented lot I hit a signal and started to dig. He was ahead of me and didn't notice what I was doing as it was almost dark. Dug up a nice Eagle belt keeper and started to scan the immediate area for the belt plate. By this time he saw what was happening and almost had a cardiac. Evidently the owner was very clear about no MDing on the property and he quickly told me to stop to avoid any issues with the owner or his lease (he had asked permission as soon as he moved in and the owner said any holes found would result in him being evicted). I apologized for my actions, repaired my hole very carefully and of course stopped scanning; just assumed if he lived there he was clear to dig and also answered the burning question in the back of my mind the whole evening - why don't we just dig in his lot. For years whenever I've driven past that place have always wondered if the plate to the keeper was there, and what else was in the ground.

Ya, the owner of this house is out in Seattle. So I asked him if it was ok, he was like cool, go for it. Told me he hopes all the people who lived here from the 1700's on buried jars of money here, I said I would share it with him, he said no what I find is mine unless it's a huge box of gold bars...LOL. I have a cool landlord.

Man you have one cool landlord! If you intend to search for the jars of money, try locating areas that would have been easy to remember back then, such as property corners of the lot, corners of the house, and near the outhouse if you can locate where it/they may have been. Another good spot people used to hide jars of money was within stonewalls as it was easy to get to and usually near a specific type of rock that was different, such as one that was of a different type, size, or unique shape. Also might try unique terrain on the property such as rock outcroppings....you get the point, look for something identifiable by the people who buried the jars. Hopefully if jars are there they weren't buried with the intent of having a map to find later. Inside house walls are also good, so if the landlord has any structural work done, be there when the construction starts.

HH and hope you find it all.

Ya once this white garbage stops falling from the sky, and it all melts, I will be out there in that yard scouring every inch. There are 3 big old trees in the yard, and a few large rocks.

My fathers house is a mile and a half away, he has 5 times the yard this house has. It was built in 1966, but it is right next to a 230 year old cemetary. He has very old stone walls all the way around the house. I'm going to detect his yard too.

My step brother bought a house a few towns over it was biult in 1862. They were doing some house renevations on a stairway. He found a spot behind a step reached in there(brave guy), and found a small box full of coins from 1889 to 1908. 2 Morgans and a few Barber dimes, Liberty nickels, a bunch of Indian pennies. Like a child probably hid it. Lucky guy!!! I told him he needs to look at the years, some may be rare...... Have not found that in this 200 year old house. Lets see what the yard produces?!?!?!?

Def. ca I have been MD'ing since Oct. but I now notice stone walls flowers from the highway etc. It's too cold here in Pa. now but soon I will be dirt fishing again. Can't wait.

Under or next to rose bushes and other flowering bushes was a favorite spot. Several years ago my neighors were digging up some old rose bushes and found a fruit jar brim full of silver coins buried there by the old lady who formerly owned the house. I found a cache years ago buried in the dirt floor of an old shed in an old paint can. Any building or the former site of one with a dirt floor is prime, as is old barn floors.

I to am in an "all the time search mode" (night and day). All the time looking for older buildings that have that "special" look, all the time looking for a backhoe or shovel about to start a project, all the time seeing what the developers are about to make a subdivision out of (I have the privilege of reviewing almost all projects in our county), all the time thinking of where some confederate hid that gold from the yanks along the Gulf Coast, all the time trying (dreaming) of where the local pirates would have hid those treasures, all the time researching old swimming holes, springs, etc...yes I to just started and have the bug and I too like everyone else do that too!

Recently I saw a few older looking "out-buildings" behind a church not 1000' away from my office. I checked the property appraisors web site and it dates to the mid to late 40's. Right at my works door step! What is bad is that I have been driving by this place for over a year now...
