Does anyone else hear use an mxt in canada. I wanted to know how much it likes canadian coins and if our coins would register solid on the vdi
thanks

Gary, I've found several Canadian pennies and a few Can. dimes and nickels. -If I remember correctly-, it seems like the Can. dimes and nickels read similar to a US zinc penny and it seems like the Can. penny read similar to a US dime??? That's how I remember it anyway...

The pennies will be fine, but the newer coins seem to have stainless steel I beleive in them as they do stick to a magnet. I know on my Minelabs it is rare I get any of the newer canadain dimes or quarter and when i do the ID is all over the place. Now the older silver Canadian coins is no problem as these had silver in them.
I dont think there is any detector that will get the newer dimes or quarters without digging trash too and will not ID them. Let see what others will say that hunt in Canada.

I went over ground that's been hunted with my (now sold) MXT with my Infinium (disc. advanced to 3.5-4) & picked up loads of dimes & quarters that read as a low conductor on the Garrett. It's about the best detector that I've used for finding current Canadian coins, especially in high mineralization. Only problem is that it's noisier than all hell, being essentially an all-metal unit (though advancing the disc. will knock out some lower conductivity trash like foil) & I have to use the tones for target ID. ..Willy.

I just looked around in some coins here and found 2 Can. pennies (1973 & 1964) and one Can. dime (1972). Laying them on top of the ground and with the MXT in C/J mode and using presets, the Can. penny reads a very solid VDI of 77 on one and 78 on the other with the coil abt. 3-4" above the coins. The dime jumped around a bit between 68-75 VDI. I wasn't able to find a nickel or qtr. to check.
It's possible that the Can. dime does have some S/Steel in it but if it does, it will be a very low grade of S/S (which is very possible in coin use). A good grade of S/S in Non-magnetic, a magnet will NOT stick to it. A low grade of S/S will be somewhat magnetic because of other alloys in with it though.

The MXT is primarily programmed for US coins but with a bit of prectice you can certainly find lots of Canadian coins. I found over $670 last summer.
Copper cents read in the 78-83 range, nickels are usually a solid 18 but may vary due to the year of mint. Dimes and quarters will VDI in the 80's except for the newer ones which have a steel core and ring up like iron. Dollar and two dollar coins I've found all over the VDI map, depending on soil and position of the coin. A 74 is usually always a beer cap and a 22 is usually always a pulltab. I've learned to trust the MXT.. it is seldom wrong. I sometimes dig a VDI just to check it really is junk. Multiple coins together will give you fits but if there's at least one high VDI, I dig it. Often it's more than one coin and different denominations. Try running the MXT with the sens at +2 or +3, disc at 2, as little threshold as possible, trigger centred, coin and jewelry mode and auto-track. I use the DD coil.
Been swinging the MXT for 3 years and I still learn something new every time out. Good luck with it.

Are you kidding us ? A metal detector detects metal, not nationalities.

I live in Michigan, and dig all kinds of Canadian coins of vaious denominations. At different depths also identifing if it is a penny , dime or a quarter.

just today i found a canadian penny here in pa and registered 77-78 dime -penny

The newer dimes and quaters and some nickles may give a problem as some have stainless steel I beleive in them as they do stick to a magnet. The older dimes and quarters that are silver there will be no problem.
I notice on my Minelabs these do give a problem and I am sure the MXT will too if you are dist out iron, but the copper pennies will read the same as our USA ones.
