Does Sensitivity Setting affect the TID?

Has anyone noticed a slight increase in TID's when running sensitivity 25 or higher. I have had solid TID's of 40 and expected dimes but still pull out pennies?

Depends on the depth. In my experience(Digger has MUCH more than me, we'll see what he says), deeper than 4 inches....off 2-4, deeper than 6....off 2-6 + or -.

Stock coil?? The coil frequency matters too. I only have an HF and a stock coil, but the HF is shifted higher on the high tones. Read the explanation by the engineer in Diggers book.(Free Download from the Minelab site. Thanks again Digger/Randy!!) "Understanding Your X-Terra" page 79 and on. (Q&A With Laurence)

Yes. Higher sensitivity CAN shift TID's....depending on depth.

At 25 sensitivity....below 4 inches...TID's can/will shift. But if you are running 99 tones, always dig a solid consistent tone &/or TID.

Solid TID of 40-44 at depth of 2-4 inches?...then lift the coil 10 inches and get almost the same reaiding????....old aluminum can.
 
The visual TID is a numeric representation of a digitally processed target signal. Add that to the fact that the TID charts I made were based on air-tests with the 9-inch MF concentric coil, and there can be a lot of variables. But to answer your question, yes, Sensitivity (and "other things") can affect the accuracy of your TID. Some of those "other things" include ground phase setting, soil conditions, coil frequency, sweep speed, depth of the target and the "angle" of the target. When I hit the local parks after a spring rain, nothing frustrates me more than digging those darned shallow pennies that should have been dimes! I'm comfortable that my settings are accurate for the site. So at least at these sites, I'm convinced that the dampness of the soil and the depth of the targets are two huge contributors to "higher than expected" TIDs.

If you are confident in your ground balance, run the Sensitivity up as high as you an without causing false signals or chirping when you sweep the coil. If you have a 705, you may find that TID Stability improves the accuracy of the display. JMHO HH Randy
 
To confirm Digger's comment about pennies reading as dimes. I'm typically able to leave my sensitivity at 30 which means that only ground balance and soil conditions should be the only thing that affect my TID. I was out for a few hours today and we had some pretty bad rain last evening. Usually when I'm detecting and the ground is fairly damp I can expect to dig some pennies that ID as 38 instead of 28 or 30. Today was no exception. That was using the 10.5" HF. I use that coil more often than not so I'm not sure if any of the other coils have this shift in ID or not.
