Don't beat me up:stars:

Just my opinion, but the Xterra 305 is a much better detector.

I had a BH Lamdstar and it may have been a step down from the BH 505 but I had trouble in my area with ground balancing, cheap construction and a less than user friendly control. I may not have given the machine enough time. However I find the ML detectors to be much more user friendly in terms of the control panel and the build quality is much better. My soil shows to be a bit towards the hot side ( Xterra 705 will GB between 9 and 30 usually) and the Minelabs handle my soils very well. If you believe you want a First Texas product I would recommend a Teknetics or a Fisher.

Whatever you go with I would strongly suggest a machine with adjustable Ground Balance. No fixed GB machines no mater what, period. With the possible exception of a machine for your children then go with something not BH, maybe Tesoro. I see that some folks like their BH machines, but if you look around you will find that many who use Minelab, Garrett, Whites, Tek, Fisher or Detector Pro have had modern Bh machines and realized they do not cut the mustard. One who comes to mind is GoGoGopher.

Thing is in the BH forum you will find that guys like the machines. On every other manufactures forum you will find them poorly regarded except for some older models. I personally have nothing bad to say about any other mfgs other than weight.

I have used the BH Landstar, Whites Classic ID (Pro ?), and the Troy X5, besides what I currently own, and prefer my current machines. I like multiple tones or the X5 and Classic ID probably would have done better, well except for the discrimination layout.

I see everyone is talking about the x-terra 705 can't afford that one was asking about the 305 I already own the BH 505 I heard from other people that Minelabs service is poor, is that true ? :ban:

Like with pretty much anything, you generally get what you pay for. The XT-305 is a $100 more than the B.H. 505 and for that extra money you are basically buying more features, The XT-305 takes 4 AA batteries as compared to (2) 9 volt batteries for the B.H. The 305 has both an adjustable arm rest and volume control. The B.H. 505 has neither. The 305 has a 1 1/2" larger coil than the B.H. and has 12 target segments to 9 for the B.H. 505, plus one extra audio tone and noise cancelling besides. The B.H. 505 does have 2 extra yrs. of warranty and a form of automatic grd. balancing. It would have been fairer to have asked comparisons of the XT-305 and the Fisher F-4 as they are priced the same and both detectors are excellent for the money. Minelab's service is very good....

I had a bh sharpshooterII which is almost the same thing. Then I bought a used xterra 50 no comparison. The xterra is way deeper and made alot better. Ground balances better it made all my old hunting grounds new again.

If price is a concern, which it likely is since you are comparing the BH 505 and the X-TERRA 305, I will say that the BH 505 is probably one of the best $199 detector made today. Granted, it has little competition at that price point. But it does detect metals and offers some functionality that is useful in the field. Does it have the functionality of the X-TERRA 305? Certainly not. But if you are looking for an inexpensive way to enter the hobby, and purchase a detector that does a decent job of sorting out trash from coins in your local park, the BH505 might be your ticket. After you've decided you enjoy the hobby enough to step up to a detector with more functionality, the X-TERRA 305 would be that logical step. JMHO HH Randy

During the transition of moving the US offices and repair center from Vegas to Chicagoland, there were some slip-ups. But from everything I've read since that move, the service is second to none. JMHO HH Randy

Lost Hunter, my very first MDer was a BH 505 and I thought it was a great MDer, but 3 months later I bought the X-50 and NEVER used the BH 505 again. If your going to go after the old coins the BH 505 is not going to get the job done, but it was a great clad hunter.

Only can relay info about the X30, my first and only detector for 5 years(have 705 now)...a turn on and go detector that got the job done and keeps working today just like new.Any of my nonMDing friends that use it...want to buy it after finding some coins....

Lost Hunter, I can only compare what I have owned or used. I am comparing BH to ML or Garrett. No comparison. What Digger posted is solid. If the BH 505 is what the budget allows then it will work for learning weather you enjoy the hobby or not. That is how I started. Ran the BH for 3 or 4 weeks before moving up. Never turned the BH on again.
