Hey - when you guys and gals are out searching for lost treasures next time - remember to keep your eyes peeled for other stuff of value that might be in the area. I also collect old glass and porcelain insulators. Most of those I have are not worth anything much, but some you might happen across can be worth thousands. They also make good book ends and conversation pieces. Nice variety of colors and sizes were made. Back in the really old days (1850s) - these were simply nailed to old trees. Like old coins, some were only made for a short period of time by long defunct companies. The fewer - more rare - ones that were made, the more they are worth. To research them - try visiting the web site www.insulators.com. Lots of good photos and price guides. Make sure you know the ones you try to collect are not on an active power line or owned by someone (like the railroad). Sometimes in the past, old power or telegraph poles were simply pushed down or fell down with the insulators still on them. If the glass or porcelain is not broken, they are usually OK to collect. Many people are actually selling them on E-bay for a pretty penny. Just remember to be looking up and around once in a while when your out detecting. You might just find something worth more than what might be hiding in the dirt.
