Last summer I started researching geocaches ( http://www.geocaching.com ) for my area. Here is one of the places a caches was hidden:

That's me BTW. This is in an old town - long gone. At the time the weeds around there were about waist all. Found a lot of dips in the ground which indicate where old buildings used to be. This was the only place with concrete.
Here is a view of the area:

There is one 'used' road coming and going from the area...a 'U' type road that connects to yet another dirt road.

Here is something to look at and think about:

Can you see what I see? It appears to be an old road that has overgrown with weeds over the years. See how the trees along the open space form a line on either side of the 'road'? Many roads in those old logging towns used to be 66 feet wide. Not too sure why other than logging wagons must have been BIG. I haven't had a chance to detect this area yet but is sure has potential. Its sandy so easy digging.
I can still feel the warmth of that day.
So, if you want to find some more old places to detect - try combining geocaching with metal detecting. You'd be surprised how many people bury geocaches in old places like this....and they love the outdoors and the challenge of finding those hidden caches...but most don't detect. They have already done a lot of research for you. Many include info on these old ghost towns, etc.
