Dual Field placed in closet for now...

Okay, so I've only used it in the water for a couple of times but no finds, good or bad. I think I will like it but won't be using it until next spring when the crowds get thick again and I can go far enough out in the water to use it. I have tried it on the beach but that is a nightmare for me. I seem to be digging trash every couple of steps. With only one working ear my hearing doesn't seem to allow me to hear the subtle threshold whispers that some of you talk about so I probably will never see the super depth benefit this machine has to offer, at least not like most of you. So, this leads me to another decision to make. Though I plan to keep the DF I want another water unit to use on the wet sand, water filled cuts on the beach and in shallow water for this winter. I guess my choices are the Beach Hunter 300, Excal or CZ21. Anyone who has used any of these detectors in the Charleston area or similar saltwater beach conditions who would offer their experiences, I would appreciate it. I will give the DF a fair try next spring and summer but need something for shallow water for now. Thanks for any help or advice concerning the three units I mentioned. I know there are advocates for each one but please tell me what you like as well as don't like about yours. Thanks for any help from all of you guys. btw, I've searched and read a lot of posts about these units but just can't make a decision. I guess that's why I want personal input on things like stability, depth, any repairs and customer support, etc. Thanks again.

If you ever look at the posts with photos of detector swingers on the beach and in the water you will see alot of Minelab X-cals, both 800 and 1000, I would say most of us like our X-cals,,,thats why I have three of them and I do prefer my 800's to my 1000,,,less weight,,,,easier to swing in the water,,,,less drag,,,,easier to pinpoint in the water, Just my opinion, good luck

add one of those SEF babies that kellyco sells or a big wot

the GT will cover all the areas u mentioned and then some................u will need a big scoop

f y i only

GT with 12 x 15 SEF attached in pic and a new 12x10 on box

Thanks, Max, I do have a GT and like it a lot. Right now I just have the standart Tornado 10" coil but I had read Clive's book about the WOT on the Sov and have thought about something like that down the road. Right now I want a water unit as I'm not comfortable even wading with the Sov. At 63 and with the ear problem I mentioned my balance may be a little too unsteady at times to risk dunking it. But thanks for the tip.

Is the weight of the 800 enough to manage on the stock shaft or is the straight shaft a necessary item for all excals? Do you hunt in all-metal and then switch to disc and what would you say is the deepest you've found, say, a quarter with the 800? Thanks for your reply.

Jerry

i carried it in small pack pack - worked nice back there.

Thanks, Max. I use mine in the Minelab pouch that came with it and it sure makes it easy to swing all day. I keep a bag over the control box and then put it in the pouch just to keep sand and salt off of the control knobs, speaker, etc. But I still won't take it in the water.

No matter how much you cover an non-waterproof detector, salt air, sea spray, etc. can end up getting into the control box, and corrode electronics and any other metal.

Also, you cannot totally rinse off a non-waterproof unit after a hunt at a salt water beach.

Salt water and salt air are a totally different animal than fresh water and non-salt air.

Just my 2 cents.

i use a cz20 with a 8 inch coil wich slices through the water easily. like you i have hearing loss, about 30-40% loss in both ears and a great feature on the cz20 is volume boost!! put it in boost and all targets come in at the same volume level loud and clear!!!!! wether they are shallow or deep. i have no experiance with the excal. how about buying both at used prices?????

Unless you properly "Water-Proof it" Like these..

One off these GT's belong to a Hunting partner and he's uses it All the time..

Not a bad idea about buying both used but may be hard to find and no warranty. I think I would rather just settle on one and really learn it. To confess, I actually did own a CZ20 and an Excal a few years ago but never used either one more than a couple of times so I really don't have experience with either. I think it was about the time I decided to quit detecting but you know how it is. Can't stay away for long. I don't recall any problems with the Excal but again, really never used it enough to know anything about it other than I did like the machine. The CZ20 had problems out of the box and had to ship it off for repairs. Sold it when it came back. Can't remember exactly when but probably around four or five years ago. The Excal and an Explorer II that I really did use a lot I sold somewhere around 3 years or so ago. Then, after a couple or so years I decided to start up again and bought the Sov GT and really love this unit. Now I just need to get a good water unit again to use because the PI is driving me nuts. I'll only try to use that when the water is calm enough to get out far enough to lose all of the small iron. Thanks.

Jerry

I use the Excal II 1000, look at my posts and see all the Jewelry It's got me in two weeks. The 800 will do just as well. Gene

Gene, I have looked at what you've been doing and can only guess that there are other hunters in your area that really hate you by now, lol. Seriously, I'm amazed at the number and quality of the finds you've been making. You and that Excal must have taken to each other like a duck and water. It's getting high on my list. Thanks for your reply and continued good hunting.

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Yes I really love the Excal II, what I like about it is, I do the wet sand in all metal, get a target check it with disc. mode to decide if I want to dig it. Then if I want to do the dry sand that has much more trash, I use disc. mode, sen. on 9 to 10 or what ever that area will let the detector run smooth and you can tell the junk from the good stuff just by the sound it makes. I wouldn't use any other detector. My post tells you why. I had a GT with the 15 wot, never come close to the stuff i'm finding now. I can't explain why, but the Excal II works fantastic for me. Gene

Hello Jerry I also did the same thing with my DF it is in the back of the van when I go out I use my MXT 300 and find a heck of a lot more also do the wet sand at the beaches with it but no water. It is getting cold here now and the water is kind of out of mind for now. The MXT 300 does not go as deep but I am finding less junk and most digs are good. I will take the DF out in the spring and give it one more try and if I don't like it oh well E Bay.

Butch

Butch, I think the DF has to be a good unit because of what others like Craig and Cupajo are doing with it. I'm going to give it some hard use before I totally give up on it but I won't use it on the beaches around here again. Only in the water. Good luck and good hunting to you.

Jerry

Gene, thanks for this post. Have you compared depth between hunting in all-metal vs disc only? Whatever you're doing it sure is working. Keep up the good finds. Seeing your posts and photos gives me renewed energy to get out there and keep trying even when the beach isn't producing.
