Dumb question for relic hunters?

I mainly coin shoot, but was driving along thinking about relic hunting today. Do you guys just dig all signals? Is there a certain level of disc to use? Seems like a lot of digging if it is all signals! I have tried hunting in all metal mode, and most places around here are just too noisy to tolerate.
