e-trac coil cable wiring

K.B.

Member
Around 2007 when I bought my Explorer SE, kellyco advertised a hip mount kit, and I bought one. At present I use it with my e-trac. A 3 ft detector to - coil cable was supplied. Awhile back I unsoldered and removed the male 5 pin connector from this cable. As good habit I drew a diagram prior. Later I resoldered the connector. I must have got my wires crossed or ? now my hip mount/ e-trac sounds off/falsing the whole time. When NOT using the hip mount, the detector operators as normal. Please can someone point me to a solution, wiring diagram, ect.

I pulled these off from the www a while back. Had my own but I think these may help you out.

is it this way you have it wired up

Pin (1) would be red

Pin (2) would be black

Pin (3) would be white

Pin (4) would be Yellow

Thanks for the diagrams. After making a diagram, checking, rechecking and triple checking continuity through all wires, pins, etc, I was sure the wiring was correct. Now I later noticed that the no. 3 pin on this 5 pin M12 search coil extension cable connector was originally grounded to the outer casing. The makers of this hipmount kit did this by connecting a thin wire to no. 3 pin and placed the opposite end between the cable and the clamp. This wire actually fell out when I separating the connector. Although I made a diagram years earlier, I didn't think it necessary to include this ground wire placement. I tried to determine which pin it was on. I couldn't tell. I replaced the existing cable, (which is the same type as e-series search coil cables) with one a little longer, The cable runs through a short square alum shaft, similar to an e-trac upper shaft but has a smaller I.D., being smaller than the M12 connector and the same applies to the female connector on the opposite end. So to replace the cable I had to first remove the M12 connector. After replacing the cable and connecting the connector, minus the ground wire, my e-trac was totally unstable, but only when using the hipmount. To the solution. Earlier when troubleshooting, I found that the no. 3 pin on my etrac coil cable connector was grounded, so when I connect my extension cable to my e-trac the no. 3 pin on the M12 at the other end was also grounded. This fact led me to assume that the before mentioned "grounding wire" was originally on the no. 3 pin, which proved to be correct. Now after this little fix my e-trac is good to go. Now I'm either going to attempt to repair my pro coil, ( right ear just broke) or buy better made coil, X-12 ?

Too many choices for coils detech 10 x 12....nel tornado....ultimate 13....x12.....I think I would try marine epoxy on the coil ear first...or google a repair kit for a minelab pro 11 coil ear brace that can be printed from a library that has a 3d printer.....google it.

Original coil is a nice coil KB. The Sunray X-12 is a BEAUTIFUL coil...construction is second to none. If you can’t get your ear fixed for some reason, you’re on the right track with the X-12. And...the Sunrays have EXCELLENT cables! I have an ultimate 13 as well and the cable is garbage.

My broke off ear broke in two, but I'll give it another try using this ABS cement. Minelab had dropped the price when I bought my SE, right before the Pro 11" Coil came out. So the SE came with the Slimline coil, not pleased. At that time Andy S. had tested a Coiltek Platypus prototype, a good beach coil but super sensitive on Cecil type soils. To be fair, l've read that Coiltek's current models are a big improvement. Bought a couple of Detechs, (early models) definitely not pleased, current models may be an improvement ? Then bought a WOT 15", great coil for the Strong of Arm, (could cut it, but now I'm like Popeye before he swallows his spinach) Finally got the X-5 and 8. Great coils in every way, made in the USA. Looks as though pre-owned X-12's are scarce. Sun Ray stop production ?

(FOUND THIS FOR YOU)

I have repaired the ear on a friends coil... its still going strong after a year and he uses it in the water... you need to make sure the pieces are clean and dry...

I use Devcon Plastic Welder 3500psi strength.

Most hardware stores sell it

Strong cleaner overkill, now I have a zebra coil. Nothing some good ole metallic spray paint want fix. Thanks Elmy, I may have to use your advice.
