ear phone jack troubles?

Occasionally, I'll be sweeping merrily along, and I'll notice that the headphones are not operating, so I have to pull out the jack, scuff it up on my shirttail, give it a lick, and plug it back in...Is there some sort of grease or something a fellow should use so the connection stays hot? Or do those jacks wear out after a while, and have to be replaced? I have the F70 with a right angle plug on the head phones, so it does get a lot of swivel action as you can imagine..my headphones are all busted up and taped together with a roll of athletic tape I got off a soccer field, so I either need to put the guts of them in differrent shells, or get a new set, and replace the female jack, what do you recommend? Oh, as of today I'm up to 2900 coins for 228.42

i would try a different set of headphones if the problem is in the detector why not send it to fisher let them fix it right. of course that would mean going without a md for a few weeks, you need to take a little time of so we can catch up on the coin count lol good luck with it let us know how it goes hh

Radio Shack and perhaps other places sell a product that is used for cleaning electrical contacts. It comes in a spray can and will not short out electrical circuits. It is really handy for when you have a noisey volume control or other potentiometer type of control. The noise will be gone instantly after spraying it and moving the control knob back and forth a few times. If you suspect your headphone jack has dirt or other contaminates in it just spray the hole for a second or two and put the jack in and out a few times.

Might just be a solder connection inside the plug broke, so if you tug or push on the plug cord and it starts to work. Might be the problem, happened to me

Start with the electrical spray cleaner, but I wouldn't spray it into the headphone jack hole, I would spray it on the plug until its dripping a bit then while wet plug it into the jack, twist it, plug it in and out a few times.
Then remove the plug and spray some of the cleaner onto a soft cloth and wipe the plug with it twisting.

That should take care of the problem at least for a long time.
I have also sprayed the cleaner on a Q-tip and reached in the headphone jacks and swabbed the jacks contact ends, but it is possible to leave some cotton fibers in the jack, I never had any trouble but its possible.

Thanks fellers! Its not broke Sven, just loose or dirty, although you gave me the idea of replacing the shells over on the mod forum. I'll give it a good cleaning like Ramer and Mark suggested. EZ, I'm not sending this unit anywhere, I need to find some gold like you got! Its not all the time, just sporadic, once a week or so, I hate the thought of missing a target due to a plug malfunction!
