Elbow trouble...............

About 5 weeks ago I did a field with the 12" coil. I was probably out there 5 hours. The field was just cut yet the grass was still 6 - 7 inches tall. So with the swinging motion I also had to push downward to stay as close to the ground as possible. My elbow has not be the same since. I haven't picked up the detector since and it still bothers me. Anyone else have this problem? And how do you treat it? Thanks Rich (MA)

Don't know how to fix your elbow but next time use a
EZ-Hand-L you won't get a sore elbow, ask Bill.

Rich, a lot of people have had your same problem. You have to build up to swinging a big coil by using it for short periods at first. I ran into the same problem when I first got my 10x14" DD coil. I had to lay off detecting for a while which drove me crazy. Now I always wear a neoprene elbow brace when I swing it which seems to help. I think I've finally strengthened my muscles and ligaments because it doesn't bother me anymore. But I still wear the elbow brace when I swing the big coil. HB

Rich, we adults don't heal quickly like when we were kids so when we get injured and then continue to inflame the site with repeat behavior we get overuse injuries. The brace is a great idea. I also use a Swingy Thingy to support the additional weight and have no problems. Try to let yourself heal by taking some time off or by switching arms if you can. HH.

Lots of guys get it who metal detect. I have had it too, but it doesn't bother me any more. I think I have built up enough muscle strength to prevent it.
Treatments Available:
Rest helps, with avoidance of the activities which over use the elbow.
Physiotherapy treatments, which may include heat or ultrasound therapy
Use of anti inflammatory drugs and ordinary pain killers (analgesics).
Your doctor may suggest an injection of a small dose of steroid to the affected area. If used it can last for up to three months, and although it may need to be repeated you seldom need more than two or possibly three injections.
You can buy a brace from a sports shop or pharmaceutical supplier, which can be helpful. This is probably largely because it reduces the amount you can use your elbow.
I would suggest the brace and some anti-inflammatories (Motrin, ASA) with food (if needed). Just take it easy and learn to swing with your other arm.

I'm an electrician and lately I have been doing much hammering which I'm sure doesn't aid in the healing process. I'm going away next week for a couple of weeks and plan on doing a couple of fields. Every thing I have dug in this area so far seems to be at a 6" minimum. I hate not to use the 12" coil. I will try using my left arm. But if my swing is anything like when I throw with it, I'm going to be banging my shins all day.
You guys make it sound like it will pass and is not a permanent problem. I hope so. Thanks again Rich

You got "detector elbow". The other fellows have offered some good suggestions but you might pick up a bottle of DMSO at your local pharmacy and dab some on. Works wonders.

I trained race horses (harness) in the eighties and dmso was a widely used agent. Usually mixed with cortisone. I use to say I'd never use on a horse what I wouldn't use myself. Maybe it will work for this hurt'n mule. I'll give it a shot. Thanks..........Rich

Everybody I know uses it. Lot of the stuff for animals is the same for humans just named different and cheaper. DMSO used to be cheap but got spendy as it got popular with people and it used to be labeled for people but the big drug companies put the skids to that as they always do with anything that is comptetion for them.
Most drug stores carry it. I get mine at Rexall here. Soon as you rub it on you'll taste clams in your mouth as it enters your body soon as it hits your skin. That's why it works so well. Try a little bit first to see if your skin is sensitive to it. Doesn't take much. A little bit goes a long way.
If you worked with animals then you should know what Corona salve is, the best all around healer ever put on the market. Will heal a third degree burn and never leave a trace of a scar. My family has used it for nearly 100 years as have millions of families in the know. Good luck with your ouey.

Sometimes the old remedies work great. When I was 12 I laid a Yamaha trail bike down while wearing shorts and left a large hunk of leg on the exhaust. My 80 year old grandmother told everyone to get the heck away from me and poured Witch Hazel on it. The pain went away and I can't even tell where the burn was and it was nasty looking. She always told me Witch Hazel could fix anything. That was over forty years ago. I hate to think what a Dr. would do to me these days or what it would cost!!!

If I remember correctly, it has been about twenty years, when I would get some DMSO on my hands I would get a taste of eggs in my mouth. I will get some today along with an elbow brace. A week from now when I go on vacation I am going to do those fields. I hope I doesn't bother me as much. If so, I'm just gonna have to grin and bare it.
I have been looking forward to this for a while. These fields are at an intersection that had 3 taverns, 3 meeting houses and 4 stores, built around 1792.
Worst case, I'll sit on the tail gate of my pickup and have my wife drive me around in reverse while I swing it with my feet. I may need a plastic pickup...........Thanks Rich (MA)

Sounds like a plan. Good luck on that hunt. I have seen a few disabled coinshooters over the years. One guy had a detector and used it from his power wheelchair and another guy with no legs used a special go-kart to detect from. That's what I call true addiction and determination.

Hey witch hazel is great stuff. Got a bottle in my medicine cabinet. Most of these Yuppie doctors and nurses today don't know about any of the old remedies that really work. They think it's some kind of ancient voodoo.
My whole family and millions of other families have used Corona ointment for all kinds of burns, cuts, or whatever, since it came on the market in 1906. I used it on third degree burns on me years ago and it healed up all my burns and left not a trace of a scar. I've seen some astounding cures with this stuff. I'll take the old proven remedies over this crap they shove on you today.
