Electronic question.

Okay fellas...................... We all know that water, moisture and electronic things don't mix. At our club hunt yesterday my Explorer XS was working just fine. After about five hours in a constant downpour that lasted almost all day my machine started acting really weird. It was very unstable and I tried everything to settle it down, but nothing worked. Needless to say I didn't have a backup detector so my detecting day was shot. My buddy let me borrow his backup Whites, but after about an hour of finding nothing I just said the heck with it. Nothing like a Minelab if you know what I mean........ :) My best discription of how it was acting was it sounded like it didn't know if my X-1 probe switch was suppose to be in the coil mode or the probe mode. Well, after taking the bottom cover off the X-1 switch box I did notice a little bit of water in there. I dried everything out and put it back together and it seems to be working fine now. Do you guys think the water in there might have been the problem? I also noticed that the rubber boot around the switch was split and that is probably how the rain got in there. I pot some silacone around it, but not sure how long it will last. Let me know what you guys think and thanks. HH.

I think you've answered your own question here. There's no doubt that the water was the problem.

You do realize that neither the Explorer or the probe electronics are meant to be used in a downpour, right? I mean, I assume you have a control box cover and that's fine. The boot on the probe switch is a dust boot. And unless you're wearing a shower cap the headphones are probably not waterproof either. I know my Black Widows aren't, because they have knobs and toggles. I guess if you are properly protected you can do it, but I'd hate to see you smoke a $1000+ machine.

Thanks Mike. I did have my rain cover over my detector and I had a rain jacket on with a hood to cover my headphones, but I didn't really think about the X-1 box gatting any moisture inside. Guess I learned my lesson and will try and keep it dry next time. Hey, when you live in Washington state and it rains quite a bit you have to live with the elements and hunt old scout camps when you can rain or shine. I certainly don't want to risk ruining my Explorer and I guess a guy should use good judgement when hunting in a downpour. Thanks again Mike. HH.

I have a Fisher CZ-70 that is billed as "Rainproof" and "Splash Resistant" (that being salt water splashes). I have hunted with it in a downpour, water pooling up in the display...dumping it out every so often. Only did it a few times...never a problem.

Sounds like you have a good backup machine that works well in damp conditions. I think there were six of us at the hunt with Explorer's and mine was the only one that got too much rain...... :)

Eddie,

I don't know why, but really wet grass causes the explorer to go nutty. Don't think it has anything to do with your coil connections. Just let conditions dry out a bit and try again. I'm 97.8 percent sure that you will find no problems.

My pals in Portland, Oregon tell me its been raining there for like the last 5 weeks straight. I just finished waterproofing my Explorer battery/headphone housing, next up the control box and X1 probe box conversions. I'm moving it all to a lightweight Whites S-shaft by the way hence the black shaft in the pics.

Charles , When you get all of your modifications on the EX2 gone , are you going to sell them as a kit ? Very Nice Work !

Thanks Chris. You may have a good point, but out of six Explorers being used in the same wet conditions that day how come mine was the only one that went nuts?............... : )

Eddie

That is a great idea and you did a nice job making yours waterproof. You must be planning on coming out to the west coast again huh?.. :) We have certainly had our share of rain lately and it will be nice when things dry out some. The wet ground sure brought out some nice silver at our hunt last Sat, but some of the guys said the sounds were really weird like iffy signals. I"ll hold off on the Aqua Explorer for now, but if I have wet condition problems again then I'll have to either go Aqua or move to a dryer state!! HH.
