Elliptical versus Circular

mrlownotes

New member
Does Size Matter ?
- Well at least possibly in one direction ?.

With all other factors being constant, except dimension , does a 14" circular coil detect any deeper than a 10x14 elliptical ?
Similarly, does a 12" circular outdo an 8x12 ellitical ?

Or -

Is the comparable dimension the smaller of the two ?, i.e. -

A 10x14 is comparable to a 10" circular, but covers more ground ?
Similarly an 8x12 is comparable to an 8" circular etc.?

Enquiring minds ..............

Apologies tendered.............
..................I should have stated Double D coils.

From what I understand about magnetic fields and antennas in general, 14" circular DD will go deeper than 10x14" elliptical DD.

But!

10x14" elliptical DD provides the same ground coverage as 14" circular DD, with less weight and more maneuverability in tight areas. And most important thing, elliptical coils have somewhat "sharper" detection pattern, thus they are less vulnerable to effects of ground mineralization and, to some extent, trash.

So at the same sensitivity settings elliptical coils will provide less depth, but since you can run them "hotter" in general, comparing them at the same "sens" make no sense :nerd:

In general, if 8x12" DD cannot reach further than 8" DD, it's because of the poor design, not the coil geometry. It has to be (at least) close to the depth of 12" DD coil!

By design, 15" WOT will go deeper than 10x14" Excelerator. But if your soil permits running WOT only at sens=10, and you can run Excelerator at sens=20... I think you get my drift

PS: WOT vs Excelerator comparison in my example is 100% hypothetical. I wish someone would perform the real world test! (without risking being killed by either Kellyco/Detech or Coiltek gangs, hehe) :starwars:
