Elusive gold...again!

As if finding gold isn't tough enough! Didja all see that 36 gr. 14k necklace spellman just found with his G2? Its up on the daily finds thread...Said it was 4" deep in a soccerfield, and sounded just like a surface Q! Ashamed to say I'da passed on this one...woulda stabbed for a surface Q, and not hitting it right away, may have made a few plunges thinking deeper stack, or big silver ring in the roots, or just walked off, thinking deep can...Even if a fellow plunged and hit it, it would have felt like junk...! So here we are again! Diggin it all for a while..BIG gold can ring up higher than I thought!

After 30 plus years THing I'll still investigate a surface quarter, but some years ago my hunting buddy and I were hunting a large city park and he was under some large old Rhododendron bushes were he started chasing a penny dime signal that indicated it was fairly shallow. After about a foot down he found two 100 ounce silver bars.:surprised:

If it had been me I would have "not" chased that signal deeper than 6". You see he was using my spare machine and 6" was max. for a repeatable penny/dime signal on that particular machine. Anything deeper, up until that moment any way, had always been a pop can or some other large chunk of metallic trash. Back than silver was at $5.00 an oz., not a bad find.

I guess one could say I'm a slow learner because I'll still, almost always, walk away from a similar signal with that particular detector.

I know right? And here you've been Th'ing for 30 plus years! This has really been bothering me thinking about all those signals I've walked away from!
Good Lord, who would dig down a foot anywhere for a penny/dime signal unless a complete noob? This is really messing me up! Maybe its time to go old school retro and really punch some holes...First, earlier this year, this one guy REVIER 's got me digging zincs for gold rings, and now along comes this guy "spellman" will have me digging pop cans for ever, and then YOU pipe up with the 100oz bars of silver! Oh the insanity!

I keep stating that I am not a digger of it all, but after nearly 41 years with the hobby, I am beginning seriously doubt myself. Just recently I recovered a neat Art Deco era compact and a old Ingraham pocket watch. Both items gave off a nice high tone with the coil several inches off the ground swinging over brush. When I lowed the coil on both targets I got an over load signal. There must have been something just different enough about them that triggered me to dig, as this place is loaded with tops and bottoms from rusted out tin cans. Now, un-fortunately, I am digging more of them. You just never know what that next target might be. Merry Christmas. HH jim tn

See? Now Jimmy chimes in... a well respected and capable hunter of all things metal and valuable. So now its back to speedy retrieval of all signals is it?
Theres alot to be said about blissful ignorance and picking up pennys out of totlots eh? Oh the horror!
