EMI and the LTD

Like some of you, I also have a few likely old coin yielding spots that emi is a problem. All of these spots would almost shut my F 75 down and the T 2 wasn't much better. And, in the settings I like to hunt with with the LTD, it never faired much better, either. Although I had tried various settings in these spots and never really liked the broken tones, seemingly loss of depth, ect. this morning I decided to devote my hunt to an emi plagued field and really work with the low gain mode and or, more disc. and less sen. and see what would happen.

I started out right under the power lines in bp, 0 disc. low gain 29 sen. and 3h tones and the LTD ran very quiet. At 40 sen. emi was such a problem there would have been no way to know if there was a target under the coil. Over the next 3 1/2 hours I worked a stretch about 100' long and about 25'-30' wide...out from the power lines. All in all, I dug 32 coins and a neat Marine Aviation Training Support Group 90 coin/token, that is about the size of a silver dollar. Of the coins, 2 were silver dimes, a 42 Merc. (no, not a 2 over 1) a 64d Rosie and 2 50's wheaties. All the other coins, clad and Mem. cents, were 60's to 82 era.

All the coin recoveries ranged in depth from 3" to 6." 5-6" depth coins were very weak sounding and I can't help but wonder if I was missing 7" and deeper coins. The Rosie, though, was totally on edge at 5." On several of these coins I switched to 6 & 7 disc. and with a sen. of 50 was able to tell they were coins, but on the 5 and 6" deep ones, the tone was a bit broken. At 60 sen. right under the power lines with 7 disc. the LTD became quite chattery.

When pinpointing the targets, the tone was a bit louder. Also, once a clump of dirt was removed and the target was still in the hole, when sweeping the coil over the hole there was only a faint, if any, tone. BUT DON'T GIVE UP ON THE TARGET. Usually the next scoop or two brought the target to light.

I did find that vdi readings for the various coins were pretty accurate as well as the depth reading. Clad quarters at 5-6" were reading 82-83, clad dimes in the low 70's and nickels, while a bit more bouncy, were 28-33, but their good tone gave them away as nickels. The Merc. at 6" read 74-77 as did the on edge Rosie.

In closing, I am glad to be able to now hunt some of these emi plagued spots, but I still have a concern with the depth. Conditions however, are really dry right now, so will just see. HH jim tn

Interesting reading Jim, thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven't run into any spots that I was totally blown out by EMI (which is surprising as I hunt the San Francisco bay area inner city), but I did try using the 29 sensitivity a few months ago just to get a feel for it. One thing that I noticed is the audio definitely took on a different tonal quality.

Went back to the same field this morning and pretty much hunted with the same settings as yesterday. I dug 26 coins, 2 wheats, no silver, a pad lock and a scout kerchief slide. Oh, and some "iffy" trash. My observations were the same as yesterday, but I did pay special attention for any really weak signals. One of the two or so I heard showed a depth of 7" and going back and forth over the target I was getting a weak waffling kind of tone. At and exact 7" was a clad dime. As was almost always the case yesterday and again today with 29 sen. setting, when the coin wasn't in the initial clod dug, when swinging back over the hole there is little indication that there still remains a target...but with a little more dirt removed, there always was. With my old ears, I now know at least I can dig 7" deep coins size targets with 29 sen. Take care and HH jim tn
