EMI

Boy I ran into some nasty interference today. So bad that I could not even run the Xterra. Tried lowering the Sens and doing a Factory Preset and several Noise cancels, all to no avail. Did hit a few pennies, but had to swap over and run the SE. This was a nasty spot, when I got there I was OK until I moved over to the other side of the front yard then bam mega falsing and chatter, even with the coil 2 feet off the ground and still as can be. Did manage to dig a 1919 D Merc by the end of my hunt.

Was it windy? I seem to get EMI problems only when it's windy or gusty.

When it happens I auto noise cancel on my 705. If that doesn't fix it I lower or increase the channel mqnually until I find a good one.

No wind. No electrical storms nearby. This is a neighbor hood that has a few spots that have been REAL noisy. There are a couple of large power lines running through the alley. The funny thing is that it seems to come and go. I suspect that some one has some amateur radio equipment or some other kind of electronic pastime. I do not see any HAM radio towers though. There is a freeway right across the street so that may have something to do with it.

This is one of the reasons I almost always carry 2 metal detectors in the truck. It seems that one will always fit the bill.

Are you sure you don't have a loose wire? When my loose wire started giving me problems, I thought it was EMI from a thunderstorm that had rolled in.

Eventually, I could make it erratic by shaking the detector....sure sign that it wasn't EMI.

recently I found that as well.... A school here that
I have detected is having a parking lot installed. They graded off the top soil about 1 to 1 1/2 foot. Thought wow great an opportunity to go before anyone else..... Found the same conditions as you described. Did not have that problem before the excavation. Was down to clay. I'm convinced it is the soil. turned the sensitivity was down and did find an old lead 50 cal black powder slug.

That is strange. Have never found a spot that my XT-70 couldn't handle, amazingly it can even be used over or around H.V. underground electric cables that the Safari can't begin to handle...

Often times you can have 4160v or higher buzzing around up there and many factors can come into play with EMI so every situation will be different.

I believe that you guys that you are seeing this problem but I've never had a problem with EMI. Surprisingly, I found about 8-10 silver in a park under and 20' on either side of some main high tension lines.

Sometimes it isn't what we think of as the obvious "signs". EMF, RFI etc and interference are all about the harmonic frequencies. Could be something as simple as a neighbor's wireless network, or one of those electronic buried "invisible fences" that someone installed to keep their dog in the yard. JMHO HH Randy

Exactly!
I know that there are parts of my yard that are tough because of the electric fence containing my livestock. Even though I'm not necessarily right near it, I can tell it's the fence because the rythym of the fence pulses match the apparent falsing.
And current enviro conditions play a part as well. Soggy wet ground makes it worse than durring a dry spell.

TodayI had the same problem at a different location and only in certain parts of the yard, but not others. I pulled 5 wheats out of this place a few days ago with no interference with 705. today the SE was unusable and the 705 was hit and miss, and the ProPointer picked up the interference at a couple of holes. I did notice a lot of dump trucks coming down the road today and heavy train traffic also. Does that mean their radios could have caused problems??? Who knows.

I do know that tomorrow I will double check under my coil covers to make sure they are clean. Makes ya wonder.

Jeff

There was a little dust, but not bad. No more problem though. It may have just been bad dust in an electrically sensitive sort of way. Keep the covers clean.
