End of swing falsing & stability DD vs Mono

I've been told that DD coils on PI's are generally more stable in high mineralization & around electrical interference than mono coils. I dunno. I've been swinging an Infinium in town here & noticed that the DD coils false a lot at the ends of my coil swings & even when held still. When I put on my mono coil it becomes rock stable with no falsing whatsoever. This is on an original Infinium with no mono coil updates. Quite puzzling. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks... Willy.

They should be and the Monno not be, have you tried the frequency adjust? If you aren't familiar with feature read manual, is on the Threshold control. Don

Hi Willy,
That is strange. Falsing at the end of swings can be due to several things. The three common ones are - changes in the beach conductivity from one end of the sweep to the other. Sensitivity to movement in the earth's magnetic field. Movement of the coil cable down at the coil end. You say you have been swinging it "in town", so the first does not apply. Also the DD falses when holding it still?
The coils on a DD are smaller than those on an equivalent size mono, so you should experience less noise and falsing than with a mono. Maybe there is something amiss with your particular coil.
Eric.

Eric is of course correct, I had in mind your reference to being in the city and electrical interfence. Also, ground balancing the Infinium is a little more complex than manual goes through, if it is to be done properly to reduce noise, especially when you change coils.
First, the Infinium retains memory of last ground balance, any new area should be re-ground balanced. Turn it on Fast and pump it and/or sweep it and give it time to settle down to good threhold, then go Slow and do same thing to fine tune it and then go to lock. This may solve your problem if it is not ground balanced properly, after that it well maybe the coil. Don

some more thoughts in setting up your Infinium. The factory show the control box mounted with the coil wire going around and into it in the rear. That is alot of loose wire to move when you change swing direction, catch on brush etc. I turn the control box around and mount it with the coil connector facing the coil, this puts control box upside down when looking at controls, what differencve does it make, you should know what they are. You can wrap the short stub shaft that connects the other two shafts together with tape to take the play out of it. I also, being average height have lower shaft clicked in on third hole up, so I put nylon bolt thru lower hole to stabilize the lower shaft and the whip feel it has, helps some with biggest coil, but shaft wall thickness isn't enought to stop it, is alright on other coils. You should leave a little slack near coil, wrap over shaft once and run coil wire straight up shaft securing along the way with velcro or plactic ties, wrap excess up before and between nylon bolts for stub shaft leaving enought to make hand pocket and connect to control box connector. This will take movement out of coil wire that maybe also causing your falsing. Don

I thought the same. I have all available stock coils for the detector & have noticed it on all the DD's, though it's much reduced with the tiny one. I haven't used the 10x14" mono on it yet, only the 8". The machine is generally left in the fast ground tracking mode & adjusting the frequency doesn't seem to do much. I thoght that it might have something to do with shifting coil windings, but the large coil is epoxy encased, so it shouldn't be a factor. Also, it's rather improbable that 3 coils should exhibit the same defect. Odd thing is, sometimes the DD's will be really stable, other times not. Could it be temperature related? When hunting in the water (literally ice cold) the 10x14" DD became almost unuseable after a while, though it was OK to start. On the flip side, my 8" mono is going incredibly deep & getting tiny targets (stuff like .177 cal. lead pellets & smaller). Could be the detector, but then I'd think it would hold true for both types of coils. The coil wires are taped up with the control box chest mounted with a flex loop near the connector. ..Willy.

I've done all of that & more. Due to the mineralization here I generally leave it on fast tracking. Adjusting the frequency doesn't seem to help. This also leaves the question: Why the DD's & not the Monoloop? ..Willy.
