England Deus Hunt

Just got back from a detecting trip in England. It was a bit cold for this So. Cal. boy, but I had a great time. I got my best find ever...a Roman gold coin of Julius Nepos, 474 - 475 AD. Here is the write up from an expert, Dr. Martin, from the British Museum.

This is a "Tremissis", or one third of a Solidus. It appears to be from the mint at either Rome or Ravenna - it's only possible to tell the difference between the Rome, Ravenna and Milan issues of this type by the style and workmanship. It also appears to have been crudely broken off a soldered jewelry mount of some sort. I only checked it quickly in Sear. I will have a look in the RIC later, but RIC vol X is a beast of a book, both physically and to look up specific emperors and types - particularly in the chaotic final days of the Western Empire. Here are the pics...

That's a great find for sure. I'm here now . Staying at the full board. No gold yet but a ham today. Chris told us all about your great gold.

Congrats on your ham. Keep swinging, the gold is there. If your swinging your Deus, and maybe having problems with the programs, talk to Col. Chris, he's with Mindy's crew. Chris and I kept trading ideas about the best way to run the Deus.

Good luck...GO GET THE GOLD!!!

Ah you were in Sal's barn. We hit that field a few days later and you guys did a pretty good job of picking it clean. Excellent find!

Yep, Sal's barn. I'm sure that land has more goodies to give up. What name did Chris give you? Whose barn did you attend?

IllAndrew. I was in Tim's barn the first week. That field has plenty still. We found a few hams, milled and Roman there. I don't think anyone went down the hill though. I heard they hit it again after I left. Next year I'll be doing 2 weeks.

Tha is a super stunning find, not many of them turn up infact that is what we would call a 'top draw find' its that good, must admit in all the years i have been detecting although have found some nice Celtic gold coins have never found a roman gold

Well done on such a stunning find.

Great save unearth! I'll be out there in October with Ron. I had a blast on my first trip to England. Once you get the England bug, it's hard to shake!

Congrats,

Mike
