eric: flexibile coil for deepstar?

i'm wondering if its possible to make a flexible coil for a deepstar. why? so i could wind it small for descrete situations, but also to enlarge the coil when i want to go really deep. sounds cool huh?

Hi David,
Cool idea, but there is a problem. The inductance goes up as you fold the coil over itself. e.g. a 500uH winding for a 15in coil becomes 700uH when folded to a 7.5in. It goes up to 900uH if you then fold it to be 3.75in. You could start with the right inductance for the small coil but then it would be under optimum when opened out. Such a coil is possible but it's performance would be a compromise.
Eric.
