What is the proper procedure to tune a PI1000? Should the machine be on the ground; in the air? Should you hold switch in tune position for a certain amount of time? I have tried it several ways and I still at times get a slow click, not quick clicks as when you are over a target. Is this normal, or should the machine run silent until you come upon a target? Also on this machine the coil wire enters the coil behind the stem mounting bracket and has no strain relief. This machine looks like new, no scratches on the coil.
 
The White's PI1000 is a old PI design. I haven't ever worked with one.
Normal to tune with coil on ground.
If you go to the White's Electronics home page, and do a search, you will be able to locate a on-line owners manual.

I have a white 1000, tune about 1" ABOVE GROUND. a slow click is right.
 
perhaps your best bet is to call White's or e-mail them, they shold have someone who stills knows.
 
Gene, you said something about coil mount,your coil is on back-words.mash buton mid-stick rotate stick half turn, adjust coil parall to ground.I bought my 1000 over 20 yr.ago still have manual,after a fue years coil and head set wires started crakeing.check wires if cracked dont put PI in wather.If I can help use my E-mail.
 
Gene tune to one click per. second on sand for best sensitivity.
I still have one and some times use it the clicking bone phone is great in noisey conditions but its not quite as sensitive as my surfmaster but I wish the surfmaster had that case also it does not have SAT so you have to tune it as the water depth increases or decreases but this is a small price to pay many thousands of rings have been found here in australia over the years with this detector mine was made in the UK factory.

So one should hear a click all the time? I had someone tell me that the machine should run silent, that is what I have been trying to get it to do. The only way I could do that was to turn the switch real fast from off to on. ANd I am wrong in that?? Ill have to get back to the beach and have another go at it!!!!!!
