would there be any way to transform the disterbance in the em field of the coil into a visual display that would show the shape of the object?
 
Hi David,
It should be possible to some degree. A coin or ring, provided it is lying flat, or nearly so, will give a symmetrical response from whichever direction it is scanned. A nail, pin, or irregular iron object will give a response that is longer in one direction than the other. often with two signal peaks. Combined with ferrous/non-ferrous ID it has great possibilities. I doubt if you could tell coins from rings though.
