Eric: What is the best size coil for doing workbench testing?

Eric,
I'm sure that there must be a good size coil that is practicle to use on the workbench to minimize picking up nearby metal. It's hard to locate a large coil far enough away from things that can cause potential interference when tweeking the PI circuits for optimum performance. Any tips would be appreciated.
