Erratic SE on salt beach

Ohio bud

New member
Last week I hunted the salt beach at Isle of Palms Island. Using an SE with 12 inch Sunray and constant sounds as I wanted to dig everything except iron. I always use automatic SENS and went down to 15. About once a minute I had to shut down and restart because everything made the machine sound off. I finally tried locking SENS on 18 and had no more erratic problems. What I am quessing is that the wet salt sand caused the SENS to go to maximum after a minute. Any thoughts on this?

Sorry... but that hasnt been a problem for me here in Englewood, Fl at all. Did you get your coil wet? If so you will have to clean it out the cover just arent tight enough to keep out minerals. Next thing id try.. pull that upper rod and check that connection. You really shouldnt have any problem running say 28 manual sensitivity. Mine transitions SMOOTH as silk from wet to dry sand. Hows your IM set? I set mine at 22 and really i dont miss a thing. Ive not hunted a beach that has the sounds of a park ever, most of the time im swinging a lot for a target. Your problem sounds like the same problem i had a year or so back. It was that upper connection that was loose. Doesnt take a lot of sand under the coil on the SE to drive it nuts. It might be a bad coil, but with it settalling down i dont think so.

Dew,

Thanks for the comeback. I have not been to Englewood since my Dad died there in 1999. I was not into beach detecting at the time and we looked for sharks teeth. I checked the machine today back in Ohio and it is working great. I had checked the connections as I have a Sun Ray Probe installed. I really think that on auto SENS that the setting went to maximum and could be controlled only by going to manual SENS. Maybe I should send it back to Minelab to be checked as I have the extended warranty.

I went and bought some elect. connection cleaner, make sure you get one that does not hurt plastic too. I now will clean my connectors on ever couple of hunts. I live in south Texas by the beach with a high humidity area, it seams to keep my SE running better too.

The SE never has any problem with salt beach, so the problem is you...... Check your coil, clean it up, change batteries and use the noise cancel on the beach. if the problem is still there, probably is an electric line close to the beach. I think

OscarSE,

I did all of the above. Noise cancel and shutting down and turning back on solved the problem for about one minuet. I cleaned the coil. My friend was using an Explorer II and we were both using Sun Ray 12 inch coil. When I switched from auto SENS to Manual SENS 16, the problem was solved. I used the same setup yesterday all day detecting here in Ohio with no problem. I think that auto SENS was going to maximum, which was too much for my machine. My friend was running on 29 SENS on Auto with his Explorer II with no problem.
