Ever Try Metal Detect A Park Downtown On A Week Day? It's Hilarious :punch:

I had yesterday off, so I headed downtown to a fairly small park with a wading pool in the center. It is surrounded with grassy hills, trees and park benches. I hunt this location only once a year, as it is an experience all on its own. There are soooooo many people around gawking at you while you detect. Many can't help but approach you and ask the darnedest question.

The first inquiry was from a business man who thought I was playing croquet, with my detector as the mallet. After I clarified what exactly I was doing, he sincerely asked if anyone had ever suggested I was crazy, to which I admitted yes. He proceeded to give me a good firm handshake, said he was very glad me meet a fine fellow such as myself and asked if I wanted to search for a lost ring at one of his golf courses.

The second hilarious interruption came from an elderly lady, perhaps in her sixties. She wanted to know if I had any luck, then told me she too once found a ring once in her life, of course without using a metal detector. Then, she said she was a nature lover, a kind of tree hugger type, and proved it by taking her last puff from a cigarette, then stated she always makes sure she steps on her cigarette on the sidewalk (which she did) before tossing it in the grass, so as to not hurt the grass. Bless her heart.

The third person didn't beat around the bush. He was straightforward and asked where he could buy a metal detector like mine...or should I say "MINE". I told him mine wasn't for sale, and he walked away disappointed, as he figured winter was going to start next week and he wouldn't have one for the rest of this week.
There were many others, but these stood out in my memory. A great experience it was! I ended up hunting two other parks and these are my totals below.

Good total of clad John.
Lots of weirdos out there make you feel your the only sane one sometimes:rofl:

I had a little old lady watch me for some time then come ask me where she could buy a weed eater that ran that quiet. One runs into some strange folks out there.

Great clad haul!:super:Yeah, there's some characters out there.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Nice finds john. Even better stories!!

Guess I need to start hunting parks downtown. The solitary places I find my self in don't have many GoofBalls, except for me

good coin haul, nothin like diggin coins all day,,,,,I had a fella come and ask what I thought I was doing going over the same piece of park that he saw me in a few days before, for some reason this ticked him off and he thought I had no business going over the same ground and told me so , funny thing was I had already found about 10 coins I had already missed, and found another 10 before I finished it,, most people are genuinely interested,HH all

cheers whadda

The grounds in and around our county courthouse are actually part of the city park system. Lots of things go on in and around the grounds (farmer's market is a good example), and after some functions, it's a good coin hunting area. However, if you hunt it during the week to keep away from the crowds, you have to deal with the lawyers, judges, and police who just can't-not ask you what you're doing. I might stoop to the sign idea, but I'm sure if I did, some hapless do-gooder would call be bomb squad, and off to jail I'd go!

So now, I just make sure my vehicle is parked nearby and I just point to the sign on the door!

- - if I was from the government. She was sure I was secretly looking for radioactivity.

"Huh? No, lady, Im not."

"Oh, I know you are," she said. Her eyes got inflamed and she continued..."the guv'mint is always doing experiments on us, what with that big nuclear place just down the road. They have to keep an eye on things once they let that stuff out, too. You're out here taking readings for them, I just know it!"

I could see where this was going. "Okay lady, you got me. But, shhhhh! don't tell anyone else. Most people cant handle the truth like you.
In fact, I tell you what. You would be better off over there" - and I pointed waaaaay down to the other end of the park - "....because, the indications are a lot less down at that end. Just a tip, you know." Then I winked at her.

"I knew it!," she said smugly. "You guv'mint types are all alike!"
With that, she hurried off in the other direction. The last I saw, she was heading around the park building at the far end in quick step time.
It was the last I ever saw of her, too.

Nowadays I just wear a bright orange highway vest. People see that thing and they figgure you are doing something official.
But I do like the bomb squad T-shirt....

God Bless the Elderly. On a Saturday i was detecting a park right down town.A few little old ladies wearing orange vests were out on litter patrol (volunteers). One sweetie came up to me and placed her hand on my shoulder. I stopped and took one ear cup away from my ear so i could hear what she had to say. She said "I know what you are doing,What type of music are you listening to while detecting?" Bless her heart,I told her Mozart's Requiem Mass(one of my favorites). She said good boy (I'm 57) patted me on the shoulder and went back searching for litter. She was so sweet LOL.

If I had a Victorian nickel for every time I heard..."Hey, whatcha doin', searching for gold?, ha,ha,ha." The I say" yes I am" and point to the gold wedding band zip tied to the shaft of my ACE. They suddenly become very quiet and a little more serious then. But yes, I've heard it from one end of the scale to the other. The biggest problem around here for an inner city park are the drunks/addicts.
