excal 11 coil issue

hi everybody, was at the beach today and everything was fine, then i started to notice everytime the coil bumped the ground it would
false. started to look at the coil and can see a copper wire in the epoxy on the bottom of the coil thats from the manufacturing the coil.
it does not matter where my setting are if i touch the coil in different areas of the coil it will false. is the coil bad, or is that copper wire shorting
me with contact to the ground. please let me know, im about to bed liner the coil if you think this will help.
 
You might have the sensitivity set a little high. Not sure about the fact that you are seeing copper at the bottom of the coil. It's not exposed is it?


edit: did not see this comment..."it does not matter where my setting are". It is possible that you could have a bad coil. It wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened.....lol!

Is it a new machine? You might have to call Minelab about it.

Thats a sure case of poor quality control.
I have seen several excals that had the same problem as yours
Is your excal made in Malaysia or Ireland?

Where are you seeing the machines with problems coming from? Let me guess.....Malaysia?

I have to agree, I know a guy that bought one, had problems from the get go! His was made in Malaysia. I know he got it replaced with a new Excal from Minelab, I can only guess that they sent him a new from Ireland.

After being completely satisfied using older model excals for over 12years I decided to upgrade and buy 2 new (Irish) excal2s (Turned out to be a big mistake!)

Between the Coil problems and abnormal performance issues
Both excal2s were sent back for repair or replacement more times then I have fingers to count on, would have to start using my toes!

I was hoping that minelab cleaned up their act with made in Malaysia but I'm starting to read posts about the same old issues with the Excal2 That's made in Malaysia

I have yet to try an excal2 that performs as good as the older model it replaced !!!
 
hi guys, thanks for the quick responses, and the quaility info on the matter. did a wash down after i got back,
let it dry, and everything seems better. maybe water entered the coil, or that wire shorted it. i am going to apply
bed liner tonight. the unit is about 2 yrs, and i dont want to miss the summer waiting for minelab. by the way it came from the big "M"
AGAIN THANKS ALL, AND GOOD HUNTING. PS. I NEED A HURRICANE TO MOVE SOME SAND AROUND HERE.

From that photo it looks like you don't use a coil cover.
Your best bet would be to give it 1or 2 coats of marine epoxy first before you spray it with the bed liner.
 
and get some Loctite Marine epoxy and coat the bottom of the coil. Be sure that you mask off the sides with tape first.
 
One good thing about this post is that we got to see a good example of what can happen to a coil when not using a cover.

I'm surprised that the wire was so close to the surface of the epoxy but I'm not a coil builder. May be normal.

I keep hearing good things about the peltors. I need to find out more about them.

How many coats depends if you plan on continuing to use a coil cover, if you apply to many coats of marine epoxy a cover might not fit back on the coil.
If it was me I would use a coil cover and clean the bottom of the coil real good using alcohol get as much of the old silicon off as possible
then apply 1 coat of marine epoxy, when its dry apply another coat over the area were the wire was exposed,
let it cure good over night then get your new coil cover and make sure it still fits on the coil
if it fits OK get silicon and fill up the complete bottom of the coil cover with it , then install the coil cover to coil and squeeze out all the excess silicon
let it dry a day and get back to hunting!!!

be sure that you remove all of the silicon first. This is great Epoxy, it sticks extremely well to coil bottoms.

I'm not a fan of epoxy (it's heavier and can crack or chip easier) but with a coil in that bad of shape a good thick coat of epoxy might be the right solution, then use spray on bed liner. If you decide to use spray on bed liner alone you're going to need to put on about 10 or 12 coats (two hours or more apart so each layer fully cures) to really protect that coil. My friend's Excal had a coil with similar wear and it was splitting at the seams due to him not using a coil cover for many hunts and that he scrubs the sand hard. I put at least 8 coats of spray on liner on it over about 2 or 3 days (to make sure they dried good between coats). If you put on the coats too close together the inner layers will never get completely hard and durable like they should.
