Excals shaft binding...

I have and older blue excal(not the horse shoe coil) that the shafts are super hard to turn, especially the on/off. When I say hard-very hard. I took the end caps off and can see how the shaft mates with the pots. So the binding is occurring where the shaft passes through the housing. I applied pb blaster, which is a great thin lubricant for about a week. Help a little. I'm sure I'm not the first with this problem, what do you suggest. I'm some what mechanically inclined, so I dont mind tinkering on things.

I have the X-Cal II with an aftermarket shaft. After each use I take the shaft apart and flush with a solid stream of water. About once a month I use a brass brush for cleaning a shotgun and run it thru the upper shaft a few times. That gets rid of all my sticking problems.

Sounds to me like he's talking about the control shafts in the pod. The only thing you can really do is pull it apart and replace all the orings. There's 17 orings total. They can be bought from your Minelab dealer I think. I know I've seem them on eBay. If you can stand to be without it you can always send it in and have them replaced. I have one at Kellyco now for a new pot or two and all new orings. It's not that expensive. Good luck.

Get some larger knobs with set screws. Then when you make adjustments us two fingers...... they move that easy. You can feel the stops MUCH better too so you wont be breaking off the knobs or switches. Before you put the knobs on grease those outter O rings good. Plumbers grease works well. I also use a product called FLUID FILM..... its lanolin based. Now i know someone is going to say those knobs are designed to break to keep the from breaking the switches. Lets get real.... fix the problem. IMO you will like the larger knobs. Ive changed all mine out many years ago and nothings broke since. Those small knobs are so tight you cant feel when you reach the stop..... so you break the knob or the switches.

That PB blaster is a penetrating lubricant with fairly aggressive solvents in it. Not sure I'd use it around plastic parts.

That aside, sounds like the O-rings should be replaced or at least try some lubricant like Dewcon suggests. I use the food grade silicon grease that they use for the dive pressure regulators. I wouldn't go with anything with aggressive solvents in it. I did go with knobs with set screws on the older blue tube Excalibur that I have. I was breaking the original type knobs.

Agressive lubs can make plastics brittle. I c PB say it good for O rings..... but it has patroilum base and methanol. I like the dive grease.

I have been USING the Aftermarket Larger EXCAL Knobs with SET SCREWS for Yrs., and they WORK G-R-E-A-T!! NO Poditionometers BREAKAGE at ALL!! But, I would SEND IT into KELLYCO and have the EXPERTS do it, so it's GOOD -TO -GO for the Upcoming Season!! Also, I think YOU can get the LARGER Knobs from them!! Best of L-U-C-K!! Les Robinson.

Your seals have dried out and need to be replaced, that is why they are hard to turn. Seals are $8.00 for all 17 seals and $75 labor to swap them out..
