n.h. bob and all metal all the time. bob, do you switch back to disc and check or can you tell treasure from trash. i am debating between expll and the se. how much difference between the two, any one pleease help.::help:

In all metal you hear everything in the ground. You run ferrous and the high pitched tones are to the right of the screen where all the good metal is. The areas I hunt are mostly quiet and a good signal is easily picked up. In trashy areas you simply slow down and work the area. No switching back and forth to screens or settings or anything. You will learn what your machine is telling you after a few days of hunting this way. If it gets to be too noisy just close the iron mask screen one (1) click. Makes all the difference in the world. When you are in a quieter area open up all the way and try to get used to the low drone of the iron.
Other than the few changes they made either machine will do the same job.

I have used all the Explorer series detector, in fact I tired 4 of the XS's and 3 of the Explorer 2 and now have a SE and each model has some different improvements to them. Now with the SE it does balance better as many will say, it will pinpoint much better too I am seeing and with the new coil I do see where pinpoint is closer to the center of the coil than the other stock coils. The menus are so much easier to get too also so changing setting are much faster. The SE will also start up a lot faster too than the XS or the II. Now when you switch from smart find to digital to check out some target it too is much faster for you to get a visual display. I have also notice that I can run the sensitivity higher and still have a stable threshold on the SE over the others. Most of the Explorers I can run 22 manual, but the SE in the same area run 26 now.The Pitch hold is very helpful to people like me that are harder of hearing as we can tell we went over a deeper target as the threshold tone changes. before on the other Explorers the normal response sometimes the signal was so weak some of us never heard the tone raise and lower of the target, but now the threshold has changed. I also notice a faster recovery with the SE, so as you see there is some difference in the SE over the other Explorers.
Now we got winter here before we could take them out and do some side by side comparison with the XS, but one guy which I would like to have seen has a silver dollar buried for years at 14 inches deep and the XS and the E II can give a weak signal on it so you know something is there. Now the SE give a solid signal on it with no problem, but like I say I never seen it, but several have told me about it.
I do feel as time goes on and more people try SE that know the XS or the E II we will see more positive on the SE, but I see the SE will be set differently than the XS or the E II.
Is it worth trading up to a SE,maybe not as resale on the XS is low right now the same as a E II, but for a extra detector and even those thinking on getting their first Explorer I would recommend the SE.

If you been reading any info on the Explorers you know a open screen is all metal and by running ferrous tones anything on the far right will be high tones and those on the left is low tones. Now while detecting you listen for the high tone of copper and silver which will read top right of the screen. Now if you hear a high tone and it reads on the bottom of the screen chance are it is a rusty bottle caps and I walk away from that signal. With all metal or a open screen you hear no nulls and you will hear any metal target which is close to a good target and hear the good target too, but if you have a pattern you may not hear hear the good target. Some will run some what of a pattern and then switch to iron mask which is wide open to check any iffy signal.

many many thanks to n.h.bob and rick in n.d.i did,nt know about the open screen before.you two are a great help to the old goats like me.(74 in march),but still lovin it.thanks again and hh:::clapping:
