Explain Limiter on my new Headphones

I just pickup the Gray Ghost Ultimate headphones and I like it a lot. I don't quite get the Limiter switch on it though. It does seem to do something one way the tone is louder and the other way its lower but I'm not understanding whats going on.

What I'm thinking is with the limiter on all tones will be of the same volume? that volume being high? With it off the volume of tones will be anywhere depending on the signal?

Am I right on this or can someone explain it better and what would be best example of uses of the limiter.

Osros i got a pair of Detector Pro headphones with the same limiter switch, it is for reduction of excessively loud target signals, but really i just keep my limiter switch on because it really to me does nothing more than cut the volume back on all targets.There are really good limiter type devices that a detectorist can add to the headphones that work much better than the type in these headphones.I think Kellyco sells them and they do a better job.It is a little box you plug your headphones into.This type will boost weak signals and cut back on loud blast,this type is really nice because you can keep your volume up higher on your headphones without the fear of blowing your eardrums and if you hit a faint signal the box will amplify the signal up.The limiter on the headphones really to me does not work that well.But these are great headphones.I hope this helps.

The limiter will destroy your depth perception on target depth. It will reduce the audio level of loud targets making them sound like deeper ones But thanks for the heads-up. I'm looking into getting a set now 'cause.............look at another way, now you can TURN UP you detector volume, allow you to hear weaker signals with out hurting your ears on the louder. A company used to make an add on limiter, but I can't find them now. Maybe I'll make a listing before I buy new phones. Thanks
