Yep just me again just about ready to buy Explo II. One Question guys..All the nay sayers stress to me how heavy Expl II is and that YOU Cant Do well on Beach!!...to noisy , out of control noise in the sand. Is any truth here...I do great with my Prizm on sand just turn down sensitivity. Any counsel would help...Whites guys are hell on high water when I say EXPLORER II, <img src="/metal/html/angry.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":mad"> , they start talking filters etc. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?"> ,I end up walking away confused. <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">

As far as a beach detector, you won't find a deeper discriminator detector out there. You can walk from the dry sand to the wet sand and into the surf line without touching the sensitivity or having any change to the threshold. Depth . . . . . hate to quote depths at which you can hit coins because they sound like fish stories but when you use one you'll definitely get a stronger "diggin arm" after a few trips.
The weight question . . . . . it's actually more of a balance issue than weight. Some people can hunt all day and others feel it's an issue. Two simple solutions are either one of the harness systems (Doc's Swingy Thingy & the Lejermon system) or a hip-mount conversion kit. Both options relieve the balance issue . . . .
Hope this answers your question

Hi Joesph
I received my Explorer XS two weeks ago from a dealer classified, at the same time I ordered a DVD and Andy Sabisch's book on Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S. I watched the DVD a few times and I have carried Andy'S book for the past two weeks reading it many times "Great Book Andy" and the learning curve is not that bad.
If you look below, you can read my post on loading and editing advanced programs, not bad for someone that has only been using an Explorer for two weeks, and last Saturday I went to a lake and found alot of deep coins, some are really old. I am in the process of trying to clean them.
Good Luck & HH

Well I have a Explorer 2 & an Excalibur
I mainly use the Excalibur now (because its waterproof)
But I used the Explorer for quite a while on the beach. First machine I ever had that worked on the beach without driving me crazy with falsing & able to find coins deep!
The first time I dug a quarter between 12-15 inches I said "NO WAY" !!!!!
Well now its just the norm ! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
I took a friend with me the other day that has not detected before & reset the Explorer to the factory presets, tweaked the threshold & sens, handed it to him and said "dig every signal that repeats!"
He did almost as well as me with the Excalibur, On his first trip!
I was seriously concidering buying the DFX & many people talked me out of it!
Glad they did <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">

Never used an Explorer in this enviroment but a Sov.excelled and see no reason why it shouldn't work well.
In reallity indeed an Explorer is a few more ounces than a lot of units so balance or ergonomics is basically the problem.
A hip mounted Explorer is not comfortable to many and many harness types transfer the weight onto the larger back muscles but work well for many.
I feel proper setting of the front rod and armrest which can be set within a 1/8 or so can alleviate many of the problems when set to ones individual body makeup.
Unfortunately the stock coil is quite heavy and many go to a smaller coil. Above methods mentioned surely alleviate some weight, but make even a hipmount version nose heavy which is a balance issue. All comes down to what works as indeed some use in the stock setup, some elect to go for a small coil, some hipmount in various ways and have seen different harness types used by some. Heck saw one fellow have a rope tied near the coil and swung with both hands.Unit has really good guts and someday may see it in a lighter more ergonomically perfect unit. Until then whatever works.By the way these are strictly my opinons and Andy has a shop about 30 miles from me, met him at a planted hunt last year and is a gentleman and certainly a credit to the hobby. His book on the Explorer is a must read for Explorer users and his articles on the hobby and books on other units are well written and offer many tips for newbies or even oldbies..

Ill take your advise..I need some clean beach air..I live 10 min from slc great lake..the smell is horrible! As a newbie I shall work to make you all proud! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> <img src="/metal/html/please.gif" border=0 width=29 height=15 alt=":please"> <IMG SRC="/metal/html/flag.jpg" BORDER=0 width=32 height=17 ALT="usa~">

the Expl II is heavy but that can be resolved with swingy thingy etc. (if a probelm 4 U)...
but the rest is just plain untruths. My 1ST week was spent on the beach with my EX II. It handled dry sand, wet sand, and black sand without skipping a beat. No adjusting or ground balancing required.
I found close to 50 quarters that week - some at 12" or deeper mark. And 3 or 4 rings.
Minelabs love the beach and White's guys are just jealous. Check out the finds here and over there. hmmm can that be all by accident???

A EX2 is an OUTSTANDING saltwater beach hunting machine. anyone who tells you otherwise has an agenda-in my opinion.
With myself the sheer number of my finds in a summer tells the tale better than anything else.
This is not to say that there aren't other very good beach machines-Fisher CZ's Minelab Sov
