Yesterday I was out searching in the sun, it was about 84 and I had been searching for about 2 hours. All of the sudden, my detector just started making this "hummm hummm hummm hummm" noise, and the screen went completely blank. I hit the x1 switch to see if it would stop, but it didnt. Shut the machine off, turned it back on. It made the startup noise, but then the screen froze for a minute and went blank. The noise started again immediately. I unplugged the coil and started it up. Same deal. Then it started rebooting itself; did it twice. I took out the rechargable (sealed) battery and put in my other battery pack which I had filled with fully charged NIMH batteries. The unit turned on, made the startup noise, then went blank. This time there was no noise though. No noise when I moved the coil, no nothing.
So I left the batteries out of the unit, and drove home. When I got home, I put in the fully charged pack again and turned it on. Made the noise, then went blank. I was just about to reset it, when I looked very close and saw what appeared to be a faint image of the smart screen. It was! I navigated through the menus and turned the contrast up. It was at 0! Then I checked my other settings. Everything was at 0! These weren't default settings. All the settings were either off/disabled or at 0. Including the sensitivity, the volume, max limit, threshold, limits, tone type, gain, and the discrimination screen was clear.
I tried to load saved settings but that only reset it back to the way it was when I turned it off. Everything back at 0 again. So I went through everything again and reset my options, then saved it. Interestingly, it didn't clear my saved discrim screens. The current screen was blank, but the saved discrims were still there. So I loaded one of those. When I passed a coin over the coil, it sounded funny. I shut it off and turned it back on. This time it said "RESET REQUIRED". So I took a picture of my discrim screen, thinking that I would have to redo it and I wanted something to go on. I reset the unit by holding down the power button at boot, and then reset all of my options and saved them. I guess the reset doesnt clear the discrim screens either, because they were still there.
I don't store it in the car or anything, and its never been near water, so what happened? I had a problem about a year ago, where the sound would shut off after being used in the heat for an hour or two. I sent it to Minelab, they had it a week, couldn't reproduce it so they just replaced the logic board as a precaution. It had been fine ever since.
The unit seems to be okay now, but my question is... has anyone else had this problem?
