Explorer II or SE

I have and love my Exp II. I've heard a lot of people claim they prefer the II over the SE.

as anyone got any programs for the explorer 11 and how to load them into my detector as i keep being told how good the explorer 11 is but after 9 months or more of detecting i am struggling with my finds, my friend as a c.scope and always find more than me .i recently put a program into advance learn and this as improved my finds of decimal coins. As i had only used the factory pre set up until this. And i did not seem to find any at all so if anyone can help i would be very grateful / doc1234 of Nottingham u.k.

can't decide whether to by a used EX2 or SE...is the SE worth some extra $$?
I have had the expl.11, SE, & e-trac.. The mane difference in the expl. 11 and Se they made the se a little to make programs and to move to one mart of the menu . They will do the same thing. If you can get a expl.11 for not much it will be good.

Make you up a program like put some coins silver and clad on the ground got to edit and put it where it well accept the coins and save it.

Use conductive tones, set the gain to 6 or 7 depending on which coil you are using usually higher for smaller coils. Select Iron Mask on the keypad. Set iron mask so that only 1/8 to 1/4 inch is black on the left side (this is the iron that will be discriminated out). Press the detect button. Set your sensitivity to as high as you can while maintaining a steady threshold. There you go... the best overall program you can get for the Explorer. It will be a little noisy but you will learn the sounds.
Hope this helps and HH - BF

Both have faster processors than the original and can see thru the trash a little easier with the new Pro coil.

I have yet to see a II, SE, or E-Trac out hunt me with an XS.

For example, a few weeks back I had a rare week to hunt. In 4 days I pulled out 39 pieces of silver. I hunted alongside an SE Pro and a II with a Pro coil. Hunting in the exact same spots for the same amount of time and combined they had less than half the silver that I found. I think they had around 10-12 total over 4 days.

I'm still waiting for some kind of real world proof that these newer machines are an improvement over the XS in terms of real world hunting, not just fancy new features.

"generating more bucks for Minelab". I am with you BG, waiting for a real upgrade that will do something the XS or EII will not. Unfortunately it will most likely be a completely new machine rather than an upgraded Explorer. Cannot blame ML for their versions other than the SE, which to me is a step down from the EII. Most everyone who did some research on the versions knew what they were getting. The SE may be the exception since ML first marketed it as handling iron better than the EII (totally false). I am just glad my EII keeps purring along.

BS is right about that XS of his. Ive hunted with him and if its there he finds it..... might be a little talent as well as the machine. If he thru that dirty old XS away and got an SE he might really clean up LOL. All said and done thou it depends on if its going to be your primary detector or if you are just taking one for a spin. You really cant go wrong with any of them if you get them at the right price. Just remember ML's police on repairs.... could be the XS wont be repairable forever.

Find a deeper nickel, 6 inches or more, sweep it with an XS, then sweep it with any other Explorer (Fast OFF, Deep ON), this is the best way to understand what the XS has that the other Explorers lost. The nickel will have a more robust signal on the XS, the XS is a nickel sucking vacuum. The same is true for other targets using an XS perhaps to a lesser degree, for hunting deep coins in the dirt I likes me some XS cause you know when you got a fish on with that machine. Back then quite a few people were complaining about how slow the XS was and asking Minelab to speed it up. The Explorer II was faster, but lost that deep coin mojo in the tone. Ed and I hunted with an XS for a couple years, we both dug about the same number of nickels. As soon as I upgraded to the Explorer II my nickel count dropped way off. A couple years later I went back to the XS and bammo I was digging nickels left and right.

Now all that said, go hunt small silver or gold chains and the SE with a Pro coil will give the XS the mumbles. I'd say the II and SE are better at picking off targets hiding in the shadow of trash as well. That's my two cents worth.

the fact that the SE will ID in the all metal pinpoint mode is worth the price of admission IMHO.

Many feel...including myself...that the EX2 handles iron better than the SE...but with the SEF coil...my SE handles iron just as good if not better than the EX2.

With the pro coil on my SE...I do not have the same luck in the iron:cool:

I use the all metal ID'ing pinpoint mode which is exclusive to the SE....as the final decision maker on whether or not I dig...or walk on when hunting in iron.

To make a long story short....either one of those machines are excellent...but I soon become lost when pinpointing with the sunray probe on the EX2. I am just used to the ratcheting, lock-on, ID'ing all metal pinpoint feature on my SE.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

All this being said...if I could find a way to put the SE pinpoint feature on my EX2...I would be one happy camper:)

I'd get whatever your budget can handle. They are all great machines. Repairs may be a concern as the XS ages and Minelab may opt not to repair them. Personally, I got the E-Trac and haven't looked back, but there's no question that getting an Explorer or E-Trac and learning it and using it a lot, you're gonna make great finds. The Pro coil is a nice addition. I often say if you have little to spend, find a good used Explorer XS or II, buy the Pro coil and have at it.
