Explorer II

How much real difference is there in the Explorer II and the Explorer SE ? Is the E II a really good machine, or would it be worth while to buy a new SE instead of a like-new EX. II? I read the company ads about improvements between the later SE and the II, but I would like to know what you experienced Minelab users think as between the two versions of the Explorer. Thanks.

Hi Reggie,

This question has been asked time and time again, my best advice is, if you can afford it go for a new SE if not get a good second hand EX II, the EX II won't let you down, it's still a very good detector.
However having said that, and used both detectors I like my new SE.

All the best....Boony

Thanks, Boony. I've checked the search option and see that it's a common question. If I can get an Exp. II for half price it seems like a good deal, though an SE would be a little more desirable. Question is whether the II is good Enough to invest my time and money in. Time is money, so if the II isn't up to par I'll pass on it. Thanks.

If you can afford it might as well get the newest technology..not to mention the warranty...On the flip side the 11 model or even the XS are excellent units. I think somewhere along the way we are forgeting the proficiency of the operator as thats the name of the game.

The Explorer II is PLENTY "up to par". The Explorer SE is basically a new and improved version of the Explorer II. You've read of the differences, so I won't rehash them here. With an Explorer SE you can get a 3 or 4 year warranty, depending on where you buy it. With your used Explorer II you will get no warranty. Other than that, they are VERY close, functionally. There ARE improvements on the Explorer SE. They are GOOD improvements. If you can afford the SE, I would go for it just for the improvements and the full warranty. If the price tag is causing you pain and you are willing to chance having to pay "out-of-pocket" to repair the Explorer II...which would PROBABLY cost you equal-to-or-less than NOT having to pay for the repair...IF needed, then go for the II because it's a QUITE competent machine. I have said before and will say again...in my opinion...the changes to the Explorer SE are EVOLUTIONARY, not REVOLUTIONARY.

But I LIKE evolution, so I have the SE now. :)
